l naar sans tim @nim Letters Patent N 92,260.'dated Julg] 6, 1869..
' IMPROVEMENT AZIJN ELECTRO-MAGNETIC ALARM!- .The Schedule referred to in these vlihetteraateni: land par: r-the lem.
To all whom it may concern.
Boit known that-'1, JOHN G.4 BUTLER', of.New
'York city, in the county and State of N ew Yori?, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ElectrovMagnetic Alarm and l do hereby declare that the'following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements iumagnetic instruments for making signalsor giving -alarms,as, forinstance, when connected with the doors and windows of a dwelling by the wires i' a battery; and. consists in 'the novel construction and ariangemeut of parts as hereinafter more' fully described; f 'In the accompanying plate of drawings Fignrel represents a side elevation of the instrument', partly in section.
Figune 2 is a bonzontalvsection, loolring from the line a: x of tig. 1.
Similar letters oi' reference indicate correslmnding parts.
. A and B. represent the magnet, wbichjs elevated above the base C by 'theft-wo clamps D E.
These clamps may be made of either metal or wood,"
Ferepresents thc armature, and G is a tlat spring att-ached totbebackfside of thearmature. y `H-is a metallic pillar, standing near the armature,
vto the upper end ot' which tbe bell I is attached, Av
gong for sounding the alarm or be employed instead of abcll.
The bell is insulated from the pillan'asseen in the drawing atjj. i
K isthe shank of a bell-hammer, attached to the top end of tbe armature.-
L is a screw which passes-through'-ft-he lpillar H, against the point m of 'which rests t ezbatk ofthe armature-spring. f
The bell-hammer N is arranged in, and sniiiciently near the bell, that the bell may bersltrnck upon the forward movement of the armature.
One end of the magnet-wire o isattached to tbe thumb-'screw P. The other end is attached to the armature-spring G.
The position of thiswire is seen in red color in vthe drawing, and is dotted'in iig. 2, to show its position in the base A.
. wire from the biliar with a second thumb-screw, g.
giving'a. signal may Upon connecting tneMthumb-screws 'with a voltaio "battery, the circuit is completed. The electricity passon its pivoter r, near its lower end, by its connectionwith the'bell-hanuner. that it falls back by the. force ture-spring and the point m, and perfecting the 'con is maintained.
'll-ire effect ofthe magnet is aided, in giving and continuing' the` motion of'tbe'iieilbammerg-fby-the'- einaticity of the armatnrelspring.
When the current of electricity vis-passed through th 'spindle of an armature, as is donoin some cases, a. stoppage of the alarm will occur, when, from friction .or from any othercause, a. non-conducting substance is formed.
This diculty is en' mature-spring.'
This instrument isadapted to usefor various purposes, but especially as a burglar-alarm in dwellings` and other buildings.
' Having thus described my invention,
What I ciaimas new, and'. desire to secure -byLetters Patent, is A 1. The connection of one end of the' electrowire directly with the armature-spring, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. l
2. .'lhe combination of the springG with the wire c, set-screw L, and armature F, carrying the bellhammer, substantially as described, for the. purpose specied." "YY 3. Connecting the electric wire with any portieri of the bell-hammer armature. as herein described, for thc purpose specified.
Witnesses 'Fn/mx BLocKLnr,
battery also connects the metallic ALEX. F. Bonnrs.
ing along the wires, around the magnet, causes the artion, and the armature falls back, as it is so balanced ofgmvity, thus bringing into connect-ion the armanection with the battery, andthe armature' is, again attracted, and again the, bell is struck. This action'is continued as long 11s-the connection with' tiro battery tirely overcome by this arrangement, the wire being connected directly withV the' ar- The above specification of myinvention, signed byv
