Description

Patented June 8, 1869.

JAMESC. YOUNG, OF BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 91,1i74, dated J une 8, 1869.
IMPROVED CAR-COUPLING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES; C. YOUNG, of Bloomington, in the county of Monroe, and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car- Gouplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
- This invention relates to improvements in car-couplings, and consists mainly in the employment of springjaws, in connection with an arrow head draw-pin, by means of which the cars may be coupled automatically, as will be fully described hereinafter.
It also consists in the devices used for opening the jaws, for uncoupling the cars.
In the drawings- Figure lis a side elevation of my invention attached to the cars Figure 2, a plan view, with the covering removed; and
Figure 3, a side elevation of the lever.
To enable others skilled 'in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe fully its construction and operation.
A represents the drawhead, which is constructed much in the usual maiiner.
B B represent peculiarly-constructed jaws, which are provided with the round bearing-projections b b, as
. shown.
ends of the jaws, and force the front ends together, as
is clearly shown in the drawing.
E represents the draw-pin, which is provided, at each end, .with the arrow-head e.
As the head of this pin enters the jaws, as the cars come together, they are forced open, the spring yielding suificiently for that purpose-until the head passes the face of the jaws, when the latter are instantly closed upon the head by the force of the spring.
To open the jaws, I employ the lever H, which is provided with the projections h h. These latter pass down between the side of the draw-head and the rear ends of the jaws.
Now, if the lever, which is pivoted to the bolt of the draw-head, be moved in either direction, the projections h It will bear against the rear ends of the jaws, and force them together, thus opening their forward ends, and releasing the pin. 7
For the free movement of the lever, I arrange a slot in the draw-head, in such manner that it can be moved but one way, to open the jaws, in order that its action may always be uniform.
By means of connectingrrods and levers, the lever H may be operated from any desired point.
The advantages of this construction are, that the pivoted central bearing for the jaws and springs permits them always to sustain the same relation to the draw-pin, no matter in what position the cars maybe.
In the ordinary constrdction, when the cars are passing about curves, &c., all, or nearly all the strain comes upon one jaw. In mine, on the contrary, the strain is always equalized.
' Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The coupling described, consisting of the central pivoted bearing 0, when combined with the jaws B B and spring D, and operated, as described, by means of the lever H, for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed, this 19th day of February, 1869.
JAMES C. YOUNG.
