CHARLES WE'ITERI-IAN, OF FOND DU LAC, WISCONSIN.
Lette/rs Patent No. 91,187, dated .Tune 8, 1869.
IMPROVED ROCKER FOR CHAIRS AND CRADLES.
-The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'may concern Beit known that I, CHARLES WnTTnnnAN, of Fond du Lao, in the county of' Fond du Lac, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking-Chairs, and similar articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts, wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention relates to rocking-chairs, and similar articles, and consists in constructing the body of the chair and its supporting-frame separately, and then mounting the body upon the frame, and connecting them, in a novel manner, by means of cross-bars, so that the body may rock on the frame, and also in the construction and arrangement of a novel device for locking themtogether when desired.
In the drawings- Figure lis a longitudinal vertical section, and
Figure 2 is a cross-section on the line x-x of fig. l, showing the locking-device.
When the rockers of chairs and similar articles rest immediately upon the covering of the floor', they, in use, wear and injure this covering more or less, and, besides this, frequently change their position relatively.
My object is to produce an article free from these objections, and this I accomplish by making the body B, and its supporting-frame C of the chair A in separate parts, and in mounting the body upon the frame, and connecting them bycross-rods D, as clearly shown in fi l.
Ing this construction, I make, and place under each side of the body B, and connect rigidly to it, the rockers E, and the upper side of the supporting-frame O,
upon which these rockers rest, I curve. in the direction opposite to that of the rockers, as clearly shown in the same figure, and connect the front end of each rocker E to the rear end of the frame C, and the front end of the frame C to the rear end of each rocker E' by rods or bars D, as also shown in the same figure.
These rods D, I connect loosely, and also elongate,
or make the opening, c, by which their rear ends areV connected to the rocker and frame, respectively, iI1
the form of a slot, so as to allow these rods a little longitudinal motion.
Near the centre of either of the sides of the fame C, immediately under either of the rockers E, I attach a locking-device, F, consisting of a catch, or clasp, b, hinged to a plate, c.
The plate c is screwed fast to the frame C, and the clasp b swings over and catches upon the rocker E, all as clearly shown in iig. 2.
Whenever the body of a chair and its supportingframe are thus connected, as will he readily seen, the former will rock easily upon the latter, and in this way I provide a rocking-chair that can be used without in any way Wearing or injuring the floor or its covering.
When used as a rocking-chair, the clasp is thrown back, as shown by the red lines in iig. 2, but, when desired for any purpose, the body B can be firmly fastened to the frame C by turning up the locking-device, as shown'in the same gure.
Having thus described my invention,
.A rocking-chair, consisting of the rockers E, frame C, rods D, and locking-device F, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as herein described.
CHARLES WETTERHAN.
