Description
@initrd States @anni @Wire Letters .Patent lVo. 91,177, dated June 8, 1869.
mgaovnMnNT 1N coMBrNnD semana AND sownn.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Hrm
To all Vwhom it may concern.:`
Be it known that I, ORRIN STONE, of Ionia, in the county of Ionia, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Gultivators 'and Seed-Sowersor Planters; and I do hereby declare the following to .be a full, clear, and exact description of lthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figurel represents a perspective view of the machine. y
Figure 2 represents a verticalI section through the Same.
Figure 3 represents the agitator-bar, that works in the seed-box tof/keep the grainV from choking or clogging therein, whilst it works it through and past the seed-holes.
Similar letters of reference, where they occur in the separate figures, denote like parts in all the drawings. My invention consists in combining and arranging,
upon a oultivator-frame that is adjustable, and can be supported, a seed-box, and appliances by which it is made to carry and drop seed, as the machine is advanced over the iield, by means .of its carrying-wheels, said seed-box being arranged on and carried by the cultivator, which, in turn, is supported/and carried by raised up or let down upon the axle upon which it is the tongue and axle, as will be explained.
'lo enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
VA is the axle of the machine, supported and carried in the two/wheels, B B.
O is a tongue for guiding the machine as'it is drawn over the field by the team, said tongue being braced by the hounds D I) to the axle.
To the tongue and hounds, one or both, is fastened a cross-bar, E, to the ends of which are fastened the down-hangers, or stirrup-rods, or bars c a, to which the front of the cultivator-frame F is hinged, and on which it may ber adj usted, as toV height, by the series of holes 2 2, dto., therein.
To the after-portion of the cultivator, or harrowframefF, there is pivoted, as at l1, a rack-bar, G, which extends upward just in rear of the axle A, whilst upon the end of the tongue G that extends in rear of the axle there is placed a cogged segment, H, that gears into said rack-bar'G, to raise and lower it, and with it the cultivator, or harrw-frame to which it is corinected.
The coggcd segment H is arranged on a crank-shaft,
c, by which it may be worked by the operator riding in his seat I, and a pawl, or dog, d, pivoted`to the tongue, can be dropped into one of the teeth of the segment, or between two-of them, to hohl the cultivater-flame at the suitably-adjusted height, when so adjusted. Y
Stay-rods e extend from the axle Ato the downhangers a, to keep them firmly braced, and a drag-bar, J, is connected to the tongue, and extends thence to the front of the cultivator-frame E.
On the front of the cnltivator F, and underneath the tongue C, is placed a seed-box, K, with lids j, for supplying it with grain.
The inclined seed guiding board g is notched, so as to lit over the down-hangers a a, and the seed-box may rest upon the stay-rods e, or on the cultivator, or partly on both.
At the front of the seed-box there is a slide, or plate, L, which can be made to close or disclose the seedholes, by means of the lever t' and the inclined arms j, by which it is hung to the seed-box.
Running through the seed-box there is a stir-rershaft, M, which is revolved by a belt, 7.', which passes around the hub l of one of 'the carrying-wheels, and around a pulley, m, on the. end of said` shaft.
On this shaft M are placed wings n, that move the grain at, around, or past the openings, so as t insure its being passed out, and to prevent clogging on the interior of the box.
When the seed-box ismot used for sowing seed, the belt k may be slipped off, or the box may be removed entirely, without disturbing `the machine as a cultivator The cultivator-frame may be furnished with any of the usual well known-teeth, and in any suitable number.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a cult-ivator-frame, carried by and adjustable on an axle and wheels, by means ofthe rack G, cogged segment H, lever e, and dog, or pawl d, arranged near the drivers seat, as herein described, a seed-box for carrying, and the appliances for distributing and sowing the seed therein, said seed-box being arranged, with regard to the cultivator and tongue, as herein represented, and for the purpose set forth.
ORItIN STONE.
