IMPROVEMENT IN' ROLLER-CUTTERS FOR PLOWS.

The Schedule vreferred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom/lt may concern:

Be it known that I, J. W. LEWIS, of Oregon City, in Athe county of Clackamas, and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roller-Outters for Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the sam e, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which is represented a side view ofa roller-cutter for plows constructed according to my improvement, diierent letters of reference indicating the several parts thereof.

"lhe invention consists in the novel construction of a roller-cutter for plows, whereby means of adjustment, bot-h lateral and vertical, are provided to the saine.

In order that others may understand the construc tion and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings. v

A is an ordinary roller-cutter, suspended upon a `bearingsupported between the lower extremities oi' two'curved arms B B.

Said curved arms B B are united at their upper extremities, and form a consolidated neck, which fits through and is riveted into a b'eari'mgfr or socket, b, so as to form a swivel-joint at that point, thereby providinga means of lateral adjust-meut to' the cutter, so that'the same'ina-y accommodate itself to the turniugs of the plow, all of which is substantially after theordinary manner of constructing roller-cutters of this character.

p Extending upwardly and outwardly fromopposite sides of the swivel-socket b, are curved braces C C', by means of which `the cutter-is connected with the beam of the plow.

Through the upper extremity of one of' these braces O is provided an opening'or pivot-hole, c, while through the upper and central portion of the other is provided a curved slot, e. The ends of the braces O C are caused to pass through vert-ical mortises cut through the beam of the plowJ and are secured therein by pins or bolts passing laterally through the beam and the openings c and e of the said braces.

The vertical adjustment of the cutter A effected by the sliding of the slotted brace C through its mortise iu the beam, the other brace, C, turning upon its piu or bolt as a pivot.

By this means the cutter may be raised orlowered at will, for cuttingl deep or shallow, as necessity may require. i y

A thumb-screw or other suitable means may be adopted forconiining the slotted brace Gto any ad` -justme'ut.

IVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent, is-

A roller-cutter for plows, consisting of'a roller, A, arms B B, swivel-jouit b, and braoes\0 O', substantially as herein described.
