IMPROVED BODY-LOOP-HEAID FOR CARRIAGES,
The Schedule referred in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DARrus Wmcox, of Ansonia,
in the county of New Haven, and State of Gonnecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Body-Loop- Head for Carriages; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompar nying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure l, a perspective view of the head, as an article of manufacture;
Figure 2, a top view, as applied to the spring-bar;
Figure 3, a side view of the same; and in Figure 4, an end view.
This invention relates to an improvement in the head or loop by which the body of the carriage is secured to the bar, which rests upon the spring commonly called a body-loop-head, the head being formed with a short shank as an article of manufacture, and so that the consumer may weld other metal to the shank to adapt it to the peculiar form of carriage to be hung to the springs, the head, so far as an article of manufacture, being the same for all carriages.
Heretofore the head has been formed to simply rest upon the top of the spring-bar, or with a hooked end projecting over the outside. In either case great dependence is placed upon the bolt by which the head is secured to the bar.
The object of my invention is to relieve the bolt from this great'strain, and make the Whole structure stronger and firmer than heretofore. To this end,
My invention consists in forming, upon the under side of the head, a projection downward upon both the front and rear sides of the bar, so as to grasp the bar firmly, and with sufficient strength to support the bar and carriage together, the bolt passing through, the head and bar being only required to hold the two parts,
the one upon the other, the lateral strain being taken entirely from the bolt.
In order-to the clear understanding. of my invention, I will fully describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the headformed upon a shank, B, the said shank adapted to being extended by the welding thereto of additional meta].
From the head, a'lug, G, projects forward, and over the outside of the spring-bar D, and from the shank, a corresponding lug, E, extends down upon the inside of the spring-bar D, the head resting upon the upper side of the bar, and the two lugs O and E firmly grasping the spring-bar, so that the two lugs prevent any forward and back thrust by thernovement of the carriage.
Through the head and bar I place a bolt, E, which secures the two together, the two lugs, O and E, re
lieving the bolt from all strain caused by the move ment of the carriage.
I am aware of the loop patented by Chauncey H. Guard, August 26, 1863, and do not claim anything therein.
Having fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described body-loop-head, consisting of the head A, shank B, and the two lugs O and E, constructed in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth as an article of manufacture.
