Description
W. FISCHER. TOE PIECE FOR LASTING MACHINE.
No. 90,651. Patented June 1, 1869.
them some VVTLLIAM E. FISCHER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN LAST- INC-MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 90,651, dated June 1, 1869.
IMPROVED TOE-PIECE FOR LAS'I'ING-MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making p Of e same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, \VILLIAM E. FISCHER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusctts, have invented an Improved Toe-Piece for Lasting-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, is a description of my invent-ion, suflicient to enable those skilled in the art to practise it.
In lasting boots and shoes, machines are, to some extent, used for supporting the last at the heel and toe, (the last being previously slipped into the upper,) so that when the inner sole is laid upon the sole-face of the last, the edges of the upper will be in convenient position for its edges to be readily stretched over the edge of the sole with lasting-pincers, and lasted to the sole.
My invention relates to the construction of the toesupptrting part of such a machine, (or toe-piece, as it is usually called) such toe-piece c-onsistin g ot'a concave bed, into which the toe of the last fits, this bed being preferably surfaced with elastic material.
In lasting upon the same machine, with lasts of different styles and shapes at the toes, it becomes necessary to modify the shape of the toe-supporting surface in accordance with the shape or pitch of the toe of the last, and as these toe-pieces are made of iron, and sometimes have to be cut away, and sometimes built up, to conform to the toe of the last to be used, (to the obvious injury of the machine, and the impairing of its utility,) I have sought to devise some means whereby the same toe-piece can be made to fit the style or shape of any last, without altering its form, and to accomplish this, I make the toe-piece movable, so that it can readily be brought to position to accommodate and sustain the toe of any last.
It is in this movable toe-piece that my invention consists.
The drawing represents, at A and B, in plan and in vertical section, the parts of a lasting-machine embodying my improvement.
(4 denotes the pin for supporting the heel ot'tne last, this pin projecting vertically from abed, b, at the sides of which are ways, or guides 0, upon which slides the heel-block (l, and upon which are the jaws (not shown) that press the sides of the vamp over the edge of the last, and the toe-piece e, the heel-block being slid up against the last, to hold the vamp in position relative thereto, and the toe-piece sustaining the last at the toe, as well as serving to hold the vamp in place under the toe.
The upper surface of-the toe-piece is recessed, or
made concave, to receive the toe, as seen in the drawmg.
This toe-piece I make in two parts, namely, a block or base, f, resting and sliding upon the bed a, and an. adjustable toe-socket, or socket-piece, g, the bottom surface of which is curved, and rests upon the curved upper face of the block f, or upon ,curved ways h on the top of such block, the curve being struck from the front upper corner of the toe-piece, so that as the toepiece is tipped, this corner will always be in position to meet the upper adjacent corner of the side jaw plate. The socket-piece slides or tips upon this curved sup port, and it is guided in its movement by means of a screw-pin, i, and slot h, and by this provision for its movement, it can be readily tippedin either direction, to bring its last or toe-supporting surface into position to conform to the shape ofthe toe of the last, the toepiece being thus preserved free from injurious alteration, and capable of ready adjustment to suit difi'erent lasts.
I claim, in combination wvith, or for use upon alasv ing-machine, the tipping-socket or toe-piece, having provision for adjustment, substantially as described.
Witnesses: WM. E. FISCHER.
J. B. CROSBY, FRANCIS GOULD.
