Description
inited Startet @sind @Mire JOHN J. HARRIS, OF S'I. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF.A RICHARD MORGAN, AND JOHN GAYSO.
Letters .Patent No. 90,534, dated Mary 25, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW'INGMACHINES.
The Schedule referred to In these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Z'o all whom 'it 'ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, J oHN J. HARRIs, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Wood-sawing Machines; and Ido hereby-declare that the following is a full andclear description thereof, reference beinlr had to the accompanying drawings, and to theelet-ters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of this invention is in certain improvements in detail construction, hereinafter more specially described. v
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use` my improved machine, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure l, of the drawings, is a side elevation of the improved apparatus. w
Figure 2 is a plan of the same.
The frame A has two handles, c, and a wheel, a', similar, in many respects, to a Wheelharrow.
On the top of this frame A is erected another, A', which sustains the operative'parts of the machine.
A driving-sllaft, B, has 'its bearings in this frame A', and is operated by the hand-,crank B', through the medium of the coggearing b.
The shaft B carries a driving-Wheel, B2, andawrist, b', attached to this wheel, operates the pitman or conmeeting-rod C, which rod communicates motion to the counter-shaft D.
The connecting-rod G has a slot, c, in its central part,'which receives the stationary pine', fixed in the The belt e communicates motion, from the shaft D,
to the saw-arbor E, on the outer end of which is placed a small circular saw, E'.
A small sliding carriage, F, has its ways in the top beams ofthe frame A', and is arranged vto slide back and forth near the saw, so as to carry wood to it when pushed forward by the operator.
The requirements of a machineof this character are such, that both the operating-crank B* and the woodtable F should be elevated sutliciently to be -w-ithin the easy reach of a man standingup; hence these important parts are elevated on top of the frame A', and the pitman O is employed to transfer the power from the driving-shaft to the other operative parts, as above described.
Having described my invention,
What `I claim, isv Connecting the two driving-wheels of a sawing-ma.- ohine, by a slotted pitman, which acts upon and is guided by a shaft passing horizontally through it, all constructed and operating substantially as described.
In testimonyT whereof, I hereunto set my hand, in
pre sence" of- JOHN J. HARRIS.
