WASHING-MACHINE.

Specication of Letters Patent No. 8,921, dated May 4, 1852.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER HOL- LINGswoR'rH, of Liberty, in the countyof Union and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vashing- Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, reference being had to the 'annexed drawing, making part of this specication.

The feature .of novelty of my invention consists in the employment of balls of wood or other .substance of sufficient hardness and buoyancy, which floating in the Water in Contact with the linen, the latterY being worked up and down between and among the balls, is subjected to a constantly varying and yielding rubbing pressure.

In the annexed drawing, which represents by a vertical section, a machine embodying y my improvements (c) is a rectangular box The operation of the machine is as follows: the clothes or other articlesV to be washed having been secured in the frame in the manner above described, and the boX being supplied with hot water, Sac., as usual, the balls will Hoa-t at or near the top of the liquid, and the clothes being pressed down between and among the balls, a rolling and yielding, but very evenly pressing and rubbing surface, is brought to bear on the clothes, and the process is repeatedwhenthe frame being lifted-the clothes are drawn upward through the balls.

Having thus described the nature of my invention, what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

The application substantially as described to the process of washing of balls of wood or other buoyant material in connection with a reciprocating frame, or equivalent device, by means of which a rolling, yield-A ing and evenly pressing surface, is presented to the clothes or other articles to be washed. l
