Description
li Y naar N. PETERS, FH NER` WASHINGTON D C y able UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM FISHER, OF LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,784, dated July 14, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM FISHER, of Leavenworth city, county of Leavenworth, in the State of Kansas, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Machines for Washing Fabricated Materials; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and .exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the corrugated rubbing cylinder A, constructed with a series of troughs or buckets extending nearly the whole length of its face at suitdistances from each other, which buckets bring up the water from the back end of the box of the machine and constantly Vthrow it onto the article being washed; also in combining with the abovementioned rubbing cylinder a plain cylinder covered with a fabricated material and hung upon springs, as hereinafter described To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing (E, E,) represents an oblong box of the proper size and proportion, in one end of which is hung in suitable bearings the .rubbing cylinder (A). Said cylinder has its face corrugated or fluted longitudinally and also on its face, running in the same direction with the flutes, and at suitable distances apart, deep troughs or buckets, closed at either end,
` which bring the water up from the back end of the box (E) and pour it on to the top of the small cylinder (B) (as represented by the blue lines in the drawing) or upon the article thereon. The level of the water in the box is described by the blue lines.
(B) is a plain cylinder about one-third the diameter of the rubbing cylinder; it is covered with two or three thicknesses of canvas or other thick fabricated material for the accommodation of buttons on the articles to be washed, and is hung on two springs (b b), which are secured to the bottom of the box. It will be observed that that part of the periphery of cylinder (B), which is adjacent to cylinder (A) extends a little under the latter or back of a vertical line tangential to the front portion of periphery of (A).
The box (E E) is supported by four legs of convenient height (K K).
(D) is a cover, which may be removed at pleasure.
(I) is the crank on the shaft of rubbing cylinder and is operated by means of the treadle (II).
The operation of my machine is as follows, viz.: The clothes to be washed are placed in the box (if deemed expedient to let them lie in the water), a piece is taken up by the o erator and one end introduced between t e cylinder (A) and (B), t-he operator holding on to the other end, and operating the pedal (H) with the foot and soaping the garment, which is rubbed by the corrugated cylinder (A) running against the plain covered cylinder (B). At the same time the cylinder (A), by means of its buckets (c c), pours the water down on top of the garment, which is allowed to feed through or pulled back and resoaped and held while the cylinder (A) rubs it. The cylinder (B), being hung upon springs (b b), freely yields to accommodate different thicknesses of articles tlt may be fed between it and the cylinder It will be seen that with my machine the articles or clothes can be eectually rubbed; and operating as it does, the piece can be fed in between the cylinders (A) and (B) and either allowed to feed through or be detained, drawn back and resoa ed and rerubbed in any particular spot, wiile the garment is open for inspection, being above the Water, it is still kept constantly flooded While feeding through the cylinders. The piece fed through, returns under the bottom of cylinder (B) to the front end of the box.
Having described the construction and operation of my machine, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Tlie combination of the bucketed wheel (A), constructed as described, with the plain surfaced rubbing wheel (B), the whole constructed and arranged substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this ninth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and fifty-seven.
ADAM FISHER. [n s.]
