Description
Sanit Mee-Sew- OLIVER COGSIL, OF HARLEM SPRINGS, OHIO.
Letters .Patent No. 89,201, dated 1111745120, 1869.`
IMPROVED FERRY-RAILWAY.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makin'g'part of the same.
To all whom fit may concern Be it known that GLIVER GoGsIL, of Harlem Springs, in the county of Carroll, apd in the State of Ohio, have invented a Ferry-Railway; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing, which makes part of this specification, and which represents a view in elevation of my improvement. i
` The object of-'my invention is to provide a simple and ecient means of conveying railroad-trains, ordinary vehicles, and passengers, across rivers, or other water-courses, without the use of boats or bridges, thereby economizing the cost of construction of the same, which for railway-purposes is generally great, and being applicable to many situations, where the use of either boats or bridges would be inconvenient or undesirable; to which ends,
My improvement consists in laying a railway-track upon the bed, or bottom of' the river, from shore to shore, upon which runs a substantial carriage, on the top of which (above the water-line, and at the level of the railway or road) are laid one or more tracks of the same gauge, or, in the case of a common road, a platform only.
The cars, or vehicles to be ferried across the stream, are run upon this carriage, which is moved from bank to bank by the application of any desired power.
In the accompanying drawing- A represents a railway-track laid upon the. bed of a stream, across which railway-traiic is to be`- carried, and upon which runs a carriage, I).
This carriage should be strong and substantial in its construction, and the upright pieces of its frame set with their edges in the direction of the current, so as to create as little opposition thereto as practicable.
Upon the top of the carriage, and on a level with .the tracks B and O of the railway, on the respective banks of the stream, a stout platform is erected, upo'n which are laid one or more railway-tracks, E, of the same gauge as B and O.
i ,lhe cars f,'to be carried over, having been run upon E, the carriage D is moved across the stream by the application of any appropriate power, and they are drawn off at the opposite bank in the ordinary manner.
My invention is particularly adaptable to use on Wide `and shallow rivers, or for .temporary lines, where the construction of a bridge would be attended with unwarrantable expense, as Well as for colliery, or other branch roads, whose construction account must be restricted.
My improvement is likewise applicable to the construction of bridges, which may be carried on in a convenient `and economical manner, by setting up the bridge complete upon one bank, and carrying it over to its permanent positionv upon the carriage D, thereby dispensing with scaolding or piers in the water.
Any convenient means may be adopted of moving the carriage across the stream,l and steam, water,'ani mal, or human power may be applied thereto.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A railway-terry, in which the carriage is so formed as to support the cars, and run upon a track laid on the bottom of the river, and to connect with a railway on the banks, as and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification signed by me, this 28th day of September, 1868.
OLIVER OOGSIL.
