IMPROVED CAR-COUPLING.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and. making part of the same.

To all whom "it may concern:

hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and

exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of our invention consists in providing the coupling-pins of car-bufi'ers with apivoted pedestal, for the purpose of making the coupling-pin automatic in the coupling together of cars.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawings, which form part of our specification Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a pair of carbufi'ers provided with our improvement in couplingpms.

Figure 2 is a front view of our improvement in con ling-pins.

In the accompanying drawings- A and B represent a pair of car-buflers which may be constructed in any of the known forms, and be secured to the cars in any known manner.

The best form of buffer for our improved couplingpin is that which is made bell-mouth.

The coupling-pin C is provided with 'a pedestal, D, which is pivoted to the pin C at the point marked f.

In the buffers, transversely of the buffer and opening for the coupling-pin, is a recess, marked 0, for the purpose of receiving the base a: of the pedestal D, for the purpose of holding it and its pin steady.

The operation of our coupling-pin is as follows In coupling cars, the pin and its pedestal are set in the position represented in the buffer B, so that when the cars are forced together, the coupling-link J, on

entering the buffer B, will strike against the pedestal D and knock it back into the position shown in buffer A, and the coupling-pin C will drop down in buffer B into the position of the pin in buffer A, and thereby automatically couple together the ears.

What we claim as of our invention, is-

Providing the coupling-pin of car-buffers with a pivoted pedestal, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
