Description

attimi Staten CHARLES N. BRUMM, or 1\/I11-`I'13;Rs VILLE,'PENNsvLvANLi` Laer., Patent No. 88,126, daad March 23, 1869.
nin-Rom MEAT-cno'rnn To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that 1', CHARLES N. BRUMM, of Minersville, in the county of Schuylkill, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meat-Chopper; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and general arrangementof a meat-chopper, which will be hereinafter fully set forth..
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make. and Vu'se the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction 'and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of? the machine;
AFigure' 2 is a side view of certain gearing used therein; x y
Figure 3 represents side views of the cam-wheel causing the oscillating motion of the choppers;
Figure 4 is an end view, in section, of the chopper; and
Figure 5 is a vertical section through the centre of the block. v
Arepresents a round block of wood, generally denominated a butchersblock.
` A metal frame, or. bent bar, B, is secured to said block, forming two standards, with crossbar on top, as shown in fig. 1. I
Inthelcentre of the block A is block, O, with a hole` through its centre, and on` its upper side, around the centre hole, it has a circular `rounded projection, a, which forms the bearing for a nut, b, which is provided with a circular flange, c, fit.- ting into the centre of theprojection a. z l
Through the nut'b passes the central shaft D, said shaft being, at its lower end, provided with screwthreads'iitting into the nut b. y
The shaft D passes upward through a hole in the upper portion of the flame B, thus having its bearings in said ame, and in the nut b.
Another nut, ,is placed on the screw-end of the central shaft D, above the nut b, and by the use of these two nuts, the shaft D can be raised or lowered at will. A
The upper end of the shaft D, above the-frame B, is square, and a cog-wheel, E, is fitted on the same, in such a manner'that the shaft may, at any time, be raised or lowered, without interfering with said wheel;
The wheel E gears into a worm, F, which has its bearings in ears, or'lugs on the side ofthe frame B.
One end of the shaft, for the worin F, is provided with a wheel, G, which has a limited number of notches, c e,- in its outer edge, at equal distances from each other. Y
- A horizontal shaft, J, which has its bearingsy in the side of the frame B,- and in an eamK, projecting-down" placed a small metal wardfrom the upper portion of said frame, is provided with a three-pronged 'star or wheel, I, which gears into the notches of the wheel G, so that whensaid shaitJ is turned by means of its crank L, motion is, through the worm F and cog-wheel E, communicated to the central vertical shaft D.
The shaft D is slotted at a suitable point above its lowerscrew-end, and in this slot the beam, or lever M is pivoted. This lever is crooked, forming an angle in the centre, and pivoted at the angle-point, as shown in gTo the ends of the lever M are secured solid cutterheadsN N, each of which carries two knives, O O.
On the shaft D, under the lever M, is placedalight metal frame, or slotted guide, P, through which the knives O O pass, said guide preventing the meat from adhering to the knives. y
.The leverM obtains an oscillating motion from a cam, R, which is provided with three teethfj, and
It will thus be seen that the turning of the'cranl'ijLl contributes motion to both the sleeve S, and toy the vshaft D, butin opposite directions.
Thecam R, by means of its teeth ff, forces the ends of the lever M, with itsknives,alternately up and -down at the same` time as the central shaft D carries the lever and knives around, so that. said knives may act upon all parts of the meat placed on the block A.-
The upper edge, or surface ofthe lever M is bevelled,
and it is on this bevel-surface that the teeth ofthe cam R operate.
By means of the angle, or crook in said lever, or beam, I get impetus at the end of that side of the beam that is down, while, as it approaches that position, it gets further from the centre, or fulcrum, thereby gaining leverage, while the other end of the beam, which is up, is nearer to the oentre,.or fulcrum, and of course .losing leverage as it approaches thatpoint.
These ends, of course, only begin to gain and lose leverage after they pass the centre, or balancing-point.
As the block A wears away, the chopper can be lowered, without altering the whole machine, by means of the two nuts b d, at the lower end of the central shaft D, and the jam-nut U, next to the mitre-wheel T, on the sleeve S.
The teeth on the camR may be of different construction. In flg. 3, I have shown three dierentshaped teeth, fl, f2, andf.
The tooth f is formed with an even plane on the working-surface, the same as the ,teeth shown ing. 1,.
and will produce the same power and speed of the beam' at every given point of the plane, or working-surface of the tooth.
The tooth f2, formed with aconcave Working-surface,.,
will have more power, but, of course, will produce less speed at its base, -While it will have less power, and produce more speed as it approaches its point, owing to the fact that the angle of the plane of the tooth is an oscillating as well as a. revolving. motion, by means lof the worm-gearing, substantially as specied. A
, 2. The combination of the slotted shaft D, oscillating beam M, with .its knives O O, and guide P, with the cam R and sleeve S,all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. 3. The arrangement ofthe shaft J, mitre-wheels Y and T, with the three-pronged star I, notcled wheel G, l and worm F, for the purpose of producing the requisite oscillating and rotary motion of the beam M, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 3d day of February, 1869.
Witnesses: CHARLES N. BRUMM.
