Description
FABER & MARTIN.
Wagon Seat Lock. No. 88,950. Patented April 13,1869.
idle N. PETERS. MLMo upMr. Wnhiugton. D. C.
tlnitxl fittest game i iii PETER FABER AND HENRY MARTIN, OF CANA NDAIGUA, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 88,950, dated April 13, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENING-S FOR WAGON-SEATS.
The Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PETER FABER-and HENRY MARTIN, of Oanandaigua, in the county of Ontario, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Wagon- Seats; and wedo hereby declare that the following is rail of the wagon-body, and having a headed bolt, as
hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings A indicates a wagon-body of ordinary form, provided with the usual rail, 11.
To this rail, at suitable distances apart, are attached catch-plates B B, consisting simply of the face I), which fits the vertical part of the rail, and a right-angled flange, c, which fits the horizontal or overhanging art. p A bolt, (1, projects from the face of the plate, having a head, f, as shown.
This plate is secured to the rail by screws g 9.
To the seat is pivoted, at h, a lever, O, the long end i being the heaviest, to form an overbalancing weight, while the short end It is turned around to form a hook, as clearly shown.
When turned down, as indicated in fig. 1, this hook catches around the bolt d, inside the head f, and encircles it in such a manner as to turn up on the backiide. as shown.
That portion, 1, of the lever, through which the pivot it passes, projects inward, forming a bearing in the wood for the purpose of giving steadiness and strength.
The novelty in this case consists in the special hookform, of the end It of the lever, engaging with the bolt d in such a mannerthat any upward strain of the seat will not disengage it, as would be the case with an or dinary catch, but the parts will hold the tighter together under such action.
This form of the hook is peculiar in this respect.
Anotherfeature is the employment of the bolt-head f; in connection with the hook, to retain the latter in place against lateral action, and prevent the disengagement of the parts.
And still another feature is the right-angled flange c, which holds under the wagon-rail, and prevents the latter from splitting under the constant upward strain of the seat.
We are aware that various kinds of fastenings, consisting of a lever and a catch, are employed for various uses. We lay no claim to such a general principle, but
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp The seat-fastening herein described, consisting of the weighted lever G, provided with the curved hookend It, when the same is employed with the right-angled plate B, provided with the headed bolt d f, the whole arranged as described, and operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto signed our names, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER FABER. HEN RY MARTIN.
