Letters Patent No. 88,886, dated April 13, 1869.
` IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF SHEET-METAL SCREW-CAPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent 'and making part of the same.
To all whom it ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, J onN L. MASON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Cap-Gutter for SheetMetal-Screw-Cap- Threading Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of said improvement, and also of certain portions of a machine to which my improvement is attached, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section, taken centrally and longitudinally through the mandrel and face-plate of threading-dies, showing the improved cap-cutter applied.
Figure 2 shows the cutter' in the act of partially cutting through the end of a sheet-metal screw-cap.

This invention relates to' a newaud useful adjunct to machinery designed vfor swaging or pressing screwthreads in sheet-metal caps, said improvement consisting in the application of a tool to one side of the face-plate ofsuch machinery, which tool will partially cut through ends of the caps, so that these ends can be readily knocked out, when it is desired to obtain access to the contents of a vessel upon which 'said caps are applied, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying drawing- A represents a head-block, from the ends of which rise, perpendicularly, two standards, adapted for receiving through them a mandrel, B, which carries on one e'nd, nearest the vertical face-plate Gr, a screwchuck, E.
A longitudinalslot, li, in the mandrel B, receives teeth a a, on a sleeve, C; and the screw c, on this mandrel, receives a tooth, d, on one of the head-block standards, so that, by rotating the sleeve O, the mandrel will receive a corresponding rotary motion, and, at the same time, a longitudinal motion.
By means of suitablo machinery for rotating the sleeve C either to the right or left hand, at pleasure, the mandrelB can be made to advance toward or recede from the work, as may be required.
I have represented and described, in an application, A, for Letters Patent, one practical mode for operating a mandrel carrying on one end a screw-chuck; but other modes adapted to the same end may be adopted.
The screw-chuck E is constructed with a bevelled surface, adapted for receiving and supporting the ange of the caps g while forming threads thereupon.
G is a face-plate, having a hole through it, the axis of which coincides with the longitudinal axis of the mandrel B and its chuck E.
This face-plate is recessed, ath, for receiving the circular, beaded rolling-dies i, which are held in place by studs j, nuts j', and blocks lo, as shown in gs. l and 2.
Said rolling-dies are adjustable radially, for caps oi different diameters, and they are arranged at equal distances'from the centre of the hole through plate G, as shown in fig. 3.
The threading-devices above referred to are constructed in a manner similar to the threading-devices described in my application for a patent, letteredA, and above referred to, and are not claimed under this petition.
The nature of my invention consists in a yielding cutting-tool, s, with a shoulder-stop, t, applied to a support, my, on an arm, H, which is acted upon by a spring, J, as shown in figs. l and 2,
The yielding tool-carrying arm H is pivoted to a fixed stud, I; and the spring J, which actsl upon this arm, allows the tool s to recede during. the operation of cutting into the end of a cap, g, and during the last one or two rturns of this cap, in forming the thread,
upon it, so that the operations of threading and partially cutting into the end of a cap are completed at one and the same time.
The cutting-tool s has a bevelled chisel-edge, and its shoulder r is designed to prevent its'edge from penetrating too far into the metal forming the c/losed endv This tool s is adjustable, for cutting more or less deep into the ends of the caps, and also may be made so as to be adjustable to caps of dilierent diameters.
In fig. 5, I have shownA a finished cap, having a circular cut or score made in its closed end; and, in fig. C, I have shown male and female caps Jscrewed together, with the disk or piece of metal which was partially cut out by the tool s entirely removed.
By this invention, it will be seen that, during part of the operation of forming threads upon sheet-metal screw-caps, with or without flanges, I am enabled to cut or score their ends, so that openings can be readily made through the caps by knocking out the pieces so cut.
Having described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A machine-made sheet-metal screw-swaged cap, g, having its closed end circularly scored or cut,sub stantially as described.
2. In combination with devices adapted for swaging or pressing screw-threads in sheet-metal caps, the cuttingtool s, applied, substantially as described, to partiallycut through the ends of said caps during the threading-operation, substantially as described.
