Description
taten GEORGE W. VAN BRUN'I, I-IORICON,` WISCONSIN. Letters Patent No. 86,261, dated January 26, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
ToA all whom Ait may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen W. VAN BRUNT, of Horicon, in the county of Dodge, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and improved Gultivator vvand I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinalvertical section.
Figure 2 is a top view.
Figure 3 is a side view, representing a modification of the locking-device.v
This invention relates to the mode of attaching cul-V tivator-teeth to the beams or drag-bars, and consists in the employment of two screw-bolts and nuts, in connection with a clamping-plate and a locking-device, the whole being used with a pivoted cultivator-tooth, having a curved arm, which is heldin position by the locking-device.
In the drawings- A is the drag-bar of a cnltivator, and Bis the cultivator-tooth, pivoted, at .-b, to the side of the drag-bar, and provided with an arm, B', which, through the greater part of its length, is curved, inthe arc of a circle, of which the pivot b is the centre.
The tooth, thus formed, is confined to the side of the drag-bar by the bolt b, and by another bolt, b', acting in combination with a flat clamping-plate, C, which is screwed ,against the outside ofthe shank of the tooth, by means of the-bolts, they being headed at one end, and provided with a screw-nut at the other, for this purpose.
The concave edge of the shank or arm B', is provided with one orl more notches, e, and between the plate O and the arm, held in position by horizontal iianges-,bn the upper and lower inner edges of the' plate, is a sliding stop-bolt, I, which can be pushed forward so that its front end shall enter one of the notches, and lock the tooth B firmly in position.
t' is a wedge, which may be employed for the pur pose of pushing the bolt I forward, to lock the tooth, in the manner described.
Were the bolt I a rigid, unyielding bar, from its Qpoint to the rear end, where the Wedge operates it, the tooth would be so iirmly locked when the wedge was inserted, that, upon its coming against an immovable obstacle, it would break before it would turn on its pivot to let the cultivator pass the obstacle. I therefore make the bolt in two pieces, m m', separated by a rubber spring, o, rounding the end that enters the notch, or making it triangular, so that it will slip from the notch, when ,independently of the locking-bolt I, or iu connection with it, employed to clamp the shank B to the side of the drag-bar, so asto hold the tooth in the position seen in iig. 1, ordinarily, 'but let it yield to obstacles.
It is evident that the force required to turn the tooth back on its pivot will vary, accordingly as 'the bolts b b are screwed up more or less tightly, and as the wedge t' is driven down, more or less, behind the locking-bolt. It is also evident that, by means of a series of notches on the shank B', or by means of the clamp C b balone,l the tooth can be adjusted at any required inclination. A stop, e', 'may be cast, or otherwise formed, on the top of the shank B', so as to strike the bolt b', and pre vent the 'tooth fromturning back too far on it pivot. v In the modification shown in iig. 3, the curved arm is xed to the drag-bar, and the locking-bolt to the tooth, the parts working together for the same purpose as in figs. l and 2.
'Ihe apparatus employod forattaching and locking the teeth, as above described, is neat in appearance,
simple and cheap in construction, and exceedingly per` -fect in operation. It is confidently believed thatits use will, in a single year, ordinarily save all the expense required for its construction and application to any form of cultivator.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The notched and curved arm B', of apivoted cultivator-tooth,`in combination with the locking-bolt I, substantially as and ,for the purposes set forth.
2.- The arrangement of the wedge ifrubber or otherv spring o, and parts'm m of the bolt I,- when the said parts are employed substantially as and for the pur poses set-forth.
3. The clamping-plate C, in combination with the two bolts b b and the-pivoted cultivator-tooth, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The stop e', arranged upon the curved arm B', and operating, in connection with the clamping-plate C and bolt Ab,substantially as and forthe purpose shown and described.
