WILLIAM H. COWLEY,
vor CLEVELAND, oHIoQ Lette/rs Patent No. 85,072, dated December 22, 1868.
- IMPROVENINT IN G-ATKES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patentaud makingV part of the same.
ATo all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLLAM H. CowLnY, of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Self-Opening Gate; and
l do hereby declare that the following is a full and ex- The nature of this improvement relates, first, to certain attachments to a double-action hinge, and, secondly,
.tothe means 4foroperatiug said hinge and its attachments, consisting of a system of levers, connected, with rods, to wheel-irons, by which the gates are opened either way, through the agency of said wheel-irons and rods, drawing uponthe said levers in such a manner thatY the gate is raised at the outer or swinging end, and opened thereby, instead of the gate being opened. by its own gravity, as in other' gates, by changing the perf pendicular of the turning-post.
The outerl end of the gate,I opened by this means, is very much elevated, enabling it tp vreadily pass over obstructions, which is essentially different from others.
Thegate closes by its own gravity, in this arrangement. a The same method may be applied singly to open a gate one way.
The construction and operation of this improvement are" as follows:
In the accompanying drawings- Y A represents an ordinary post, set in the ground, and 1 B, a gate. l
Attached to the side-post A is a double-actin g hinge, 0,-which I construct in the following manner:
A boxei frame, C, is cast in'metal, to the edges c of which are hung or pivoted the leaves of the-hinge a b (l, 'the leaf .a turning to the light, aud the leaf d to ythe left The leaf b is secu'red to the opposite ends of the leaves a, d, and turns with them in either direction. v
'Upon the topof the hinge, and firmly attached t0 the turning-pin e,'is a plate, f, having two pins g g -on theupper side, the purpose of which will be hereafter Tothe bottom of the hinge there is also a similar plate, h, secured to the opposite turning-pin i.
I -sired to have a gate open but one way.
To this plate is attacheda rod, la, connecting with the lever l, by and through which motion is transmitted to the hinge.
Attached to thebottom of the gate is acircula' plate, D, having two circular grooves n n, -This plate sets upon the pins g g, playing in the said grooves.
This hinge is placed partly below the surface of the ground, and connects with the `levers -placed in a suitable box or recess below the surface of the ground.
The levers consist of three arms, l l' l, pivoted, at their junction, tothe ground, which pivot forms their fulcrum. As before mentioned, the hinge connects with the lever l.
with the wheel-irons, not shown. l The lever l is connected, by a rod, c', to alever, I, which is intended to operate a hinge upon another post when two gates are used, The upper side of the gate is hung by a hinge, E, which sustains the weight of the gate, thus relieving the lower hinge.
The operation of this -arrangement is as follows:
' When the rod lr is drawn upon'by the action of the wheel-irons, the leaves l l l are' moved inl the direction indicated by the dotted lines, lig. 2, by which the hinge is operated or opened toward the left hand.
The forward end of the gate being raised, releases 'the catch s, and the gate, when swung around, is con.-
to pass over any obstructions.
The 'groovesn Inin the plate Dvperinit theV gate to be opened by hand suciently for a person -to pass By reverse action, the gate' can be operated' to open in the opposite direction indicated by the dotted line. As will be seen by iig. 5, a hinge maybe constructed, onthe same principle, to operate singly,when-it is de- What I claim as my improvement,
'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
WM. H. GOWLEY.
Witnesses To the lever l are attached therods r c', connected 'siderably elevated, which enables the gate lvery readily through, if desired, end also relieves the gate from The combination of the -plate D, attached tothe inner' end of the gate, and provided with curved slots
