Description
F. D. "KENNEDY.
Warming Sleighs.
Patented Jan. 19, 1869.
NjFE TERS, PNOTO-LlfHDGRAPNER, WASHINGTON, D C.
git tent" film FRANCIS D. KENNEDY, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 85,937 dated Janna/r1 19, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT m wARMInG snmens.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Framers D. KENNEDY, oi the city and county of Albany, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters for Sleighs, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying dlawings, making a part of this specification, and the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal cross-section through sleigh and invention.
Figure 2 is-a perspective view of the invention with part of the wire and perforated plate broken away.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a chamber under the rave of a sleigh, for the purpose of containing a lamp-to warm the feet of passengers.
The chamber is constructed with metal sides, so as to render it non-combustible.
The side of the said heating-chamber towards the inside of the sleigh is constructed of wire gauze above and corrugated metal below, with a space of about one inch, more or less,'between, which, while it allows the free escape of warm air against the feet of thetraveller, will not scorch or burn them.
The side of the heating-chamber in front of the sleigh may be covered or-enclosed by a panel of wood, with an air-space between the said panel and the metal on the inner side; or, it may be of metal only, and it is hinged so as to open to give access to the chamber.
The two other sides may be of metal, or metal and panel, and may be provided with glass to cast light from within; and the said sides are fastened permanently.
The bottom of the chamber is provided with an opening, of such size and form as to receive the lower portion of the lamp used.
The lamp may be of -any desirable form and size, as may be best adapted to the sleigh, and may burn any kind of fluid fuel that may be best suitable. If kerosene or similar oil is used, I would use a long metal chimney, well fixed to the lamp, so as to insure perfect combustion and prevent smoke.
A suificient draught is allowed through the joint of the hinged door in front,'or draught-holes may be provided in the bottom.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it, in reference to the drawings and their letters of reference, the same letters indicating like parts.
A, fig.-1, represents the body of a sleigh,of which a, is a rave, and b is the upper portion of the runner.
Attached to the front of the sleigh, between the red points x, is a heating-chamber, B.
The said heating-chamber is constructed with the sides 0 d cc, and bottom, f.
The side 0 towards the occupant of the sleigh, is made of perforated sheet-metal, c, fastened to the under side of the rave c, and a sheet of wire cloth, a, (or coarse sieve-like,) fastened .to the upper side of the said rave a, leaving an air-space of about one inch, more or less, between. This air-space prevents the wire cloth from becoming so warm as to scorch the usual rug placed over it, or the feet of the occupant becoming uncomfortably warm.
The front side, 01, is made of sheet-metal, and may be covered with a panel and painted, in the usual way, and is hinged at the top, for convenient access to the inside of the chamber, though the communication with the chamber may be in other ways, as from the sides c or front, 0.
The sides 0 e are made of metal, and may also be aided with glasses g.
The bottom, f,'is made of sheet-metal, and is provided with an opening, to receive the lower portion of the heating-lamp h.
It also may be provided with draught-holes, i, if desirable. r a The lamp It may be of any desirable form and size, and constructed with flanges, to impinge on the upper lamp.
Any kind of fluid fuel may be used; and if kerosene or any similar kind of oil is used, I would use with the said lamp a metallic chimney of good length, so as to give perfect combustion to the said oil, and also consume the smoke to a great degree.
A space, k, betweenthe cross-bars m and the sheet of woven wire, 0, admits the escape of smoke, if any, and also the smoke-holes non the sides.
If necessary or desirable, the wire cloth 0 may be extended back to near the seat, as shown by red-dotted lines 0 on rave a, fig. 1.
When the sleigh is constructed double, and provided with two seats, one back and the other front, to warm the occupant of the back seat, I would place the chamber B under the back of the front seat, (which seat is usually open toward the back seat,) and furnished the same and operated in the same way as if it is in front.
To operate this heater, the lamp h is lighted, and throws out heat into the chamber B, which escapes against the feet of the occupant of the sleigh through the perforated metal 0' and wire cloth 0, while the smoke, if any, escapes through the space It and the smoke-holes a1.
Having described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' 1. In combination with a sleigh, A, a heating-chamber, B, constructed of the perforated plate 0 and wire cloth 0'', sides 8 c, and bottom, f, all constructed and arranged in the manner specified.
covered with a panel, as the side d, and may be prosurface of the bottom, f, to hold and support the said .2. In combination with a heating-chamber, B, 0011- shown by dotted lines 0, or placed under the back of I str'ucted as described, a heating-lamp, h, and all in the front seat of a double sleigh, in the manner subcombination with a sleigh, A, as and for the purpose stantially as specified.
set forth, as specified. FRANCIS D. KENNEDY.
3. A sleigh, A, warmed by a lamp, h, enclosed within Witnesses: a chamber, B, constructed and arranged with or with- ALEX. SELKLRK,
out the extension of the bottom, f, and wire cloth a, J AS. A. BUCKBEE, J r.
