LEVI ADAMS, .OF AMHERST, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 83,234, dated October 20, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN KING-BOLT AND WlHIIILETREE-PLATE FOR VEHICLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Pateht and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnvr ADAMS, of Amherst, in the county of Hampshire, and. State ,of Massachusetts,
have invented a new and improved King-Bolt and' This invention relates to a new and improved kin bolt and whiffletree-plate for wheel-vehicles, whereby several advantages are obtained, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure 1 is a vertical section of my invention, taken in the line a: 27, fig. 2.
Figure 2, an inverted plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 7
A represents a plate of cast-iron, which has two parallel ledges, c'c, at its under side, one edge projecting down in front of the axle A, and the other at the rear side of the same, said plate being secured to the axle by clips, which fit over the ends of the former.
In the upper surface of the plate A there is a semiannular groove, b, and the front part of said plate extends forward of the axle, and has a hole, 0, in it, equidistant from each end, and consequently in line with the centre of the platefie fig. 2.)
B represents a plate of ast-iron, the upper surface of which is provided with two parallel ledges d d, be-
tween which the spring-bar or bolster B is fitted.
The under side of the plate'B is provided with a semi-annular ledge, c, which is fitted and works in the groove b of plate A, (see fig. 1,) and the front part of plateB has a projection or extension, f, which is provided with a tubular pendant, g, the latter fitting into or passing through the hole 0 in the front part of plate A, as shown more particularly in fig. 1. Through this pendant tube g the king-bolt passes.
The rear part of the plate B is provided with an extension, h, to which the front end of the perch or reach is attached.
By this arrangement the king-bolt is placed in front of the axle, and the spring-bar or bolster and the axle prevented from tilting or inclining forward, as is now frequently the case.
The axle also is not weakened by having the kingbolt pass through it.
The device may be cheaply constructed and applied, and is far more desirable in every respect than the ordinary king-bolt plates now, in use.
The invention is also applicable to whifiletree-plates, the platesA, B, in the latter case, of course, being much smaller, cast of a size proportionate to the Whitfietrees.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The two plates, constructed as described, the one, A, provided with the parallel flanges a a, semi-annular groove, b, and opening 0, the other, B, provided with the parallel flanges d d, semi-annular ledge 0, projection f, tubular pendant g, and reach-extension h, all arranged and operating as described, for the purpose specified.
