MROVEMENT IN MACHINE FOR FORNIING SHEET-METAL PANB.I
The Schedule referredlto Ln these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. II. KENNEDY, of Hydetown, Oil Greek township, county or Crawford, and State 'of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Machine for Forming Sheet-h/Ietallans oi' rectangular form; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification, and in whichy Figure 1 is a top view of the machine, spread open ready for the insertion of the sheet-metal;
Figure 2 is a transverse section on line A B of iig. l, showing the machine with the sheet-metal inserted and clamped down ready for bending;
Figure 3 is a transverse section on line G D and Figure 4 is a longitudinal section of one end of the bending-bar, taken on line E F of fig. I.
,A is a supporting-bar or bedfplate, to which the other parts ofthe machine are attached, and when in use, it should be bolted, or otherwise secured iirmly to the bench of the Workman.
A bending-bar, B, is hinged to one edge ofthe bedplate A, and a clamp-bar, C, is hinged to the opposite or outer edge of the bending-bar B, all as shown. Aiterlthe sheet-metal is inserted, the clamp-bar C is pressed down upon it, and held iirmly in place by means of the pivoted lever D, by which, also, the bending-bar is turned up, as shown in iig. 2.
Thus far, my machine is not materially diierent from others which have heretofore been made.
The object of my invention is to so arrange and construct the machine, that it shall be4 capable of forming the sides and angles of rectangular sheet metal pans at one operation, and be adaptable, by a slight change oi parts, to all the differentl sizes of pans in ordinary use,vthus avoiding the present necessity of a separate machine for each size of pan. A
For forming the corners of the pans, a formingpiece, a, is cast upon each end of the bed-plate, and with a bevelled surface, b, projecting therefrom. At each end of the bending-bar B, a bevelled formingsurface, c, isprovided, so arranged that as the sheet metal isbent, by turning np the bending-bar B, the surplus metal at the corners of the pan shall be vpressed or pinched together by and between the forming-surfaces b and o'.
In order. that pans of various sizes may be made upon the same machine, I provide a detachable endformer, a', with a bevelled forming-surface, b', and I so arrange that it may be attached irmly to the bedplate A, (by means of a groove and thumb-screw, or in any other convenient mannen) at as many points along the upper surface of said bed-plate as the di mensions of the various sizes of pans may require, say four or'ive sizes. i
In the bending-bar B, I provide a series of grooves or channels, d d, of suiiicient width and depth to receive the surplus metal, and' the projecting portion b of the detachable end-former c', (in whichever position it may be placed,) as the bending-bar is turned up. I provide a sliding gauge, e, upon the bending-bar, which gauge may be set in any position, parallel with the edge of the clamp-bar, to give the required depth of pan.
Under the above-described arrangement of parts, a single machine is capable of forming pans of any desired sizel and depth, limited only by the length of the bed-plate and bending-bar; but a separate clamp-bar, C C', must be furnished for each size of pan required, and to allow of the ready attachment of said clampbars of dili'erent lengths, eXtra hinges are cast upon one end ofthe bending-bar, as shown.
The position of the pivotted lever D should be at or near the centre of the clamp-bar, and I make provision for it on the bending-bar, as shown at f. The different lengths of clamp-bars, and the positions of the detachable end-t`ormer a', are shown in dotted black lines in fig. l.
The red lines in fig. 2 show the position ofthe machine at'ter the metal is bent, and the blue lines represent the position of the sheet-metal during the process.
vIn' making pans of the largest size, the longest accompanying clamp-bar C is used, the detachable end-formera is removed altogether, and the corners are formed between the surfaces b and e.' When a smaller size is required, it is only necessary to change the clamp-bar for one of the required length, and attach the'end-former c to the bed-plate.
It will be observed that in forming the ends or shortest sides of the pans, the end-formers are not used, but the metal is simplybent between them. The corners of the pans are formed when bending the remaining two sides.
In peculiar cases,it may be desirable to'make pans of other than rectangular form, in which case my machine can be readily adapted to all varieties of angular pans.
Having thus described my improved machine,
What I claim as my invention, and desire to segun; by Letters Patent, is v 1. In combination with the bed-plate A, the detachable end-former a', arranged to operate in connection with the forming-surfaces c c', upon the bending-bar, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In the construction of the bending-bar B, the described arrangement of the forming-surfaces c e', (one lor more, as may be required,) to operate in connection with the detachable end-former a upon the sam-z bed-plate, substantially as and for 'che purposes set stantiaily in the manner and for 4lche pi'poses 'set fort-h. l forth.
