Description

0. MATE-R.
Plow.
Patented Oct. '6', 1868.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
DANIEL MATER, OF BELLMORE,
IMPROVEMENT m PLOWS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 82,858, dated October 6, 1868'.
1'0 all whom/ it may concern,
-Be it known that I, DANIEL MATER, of Bellmore, in the county of Parke and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Im-. .provement in Flows; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of. this specification, in which- Figure lfis a plan .view of my improved invention, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same.
Corresponding letters represent corresponding parts in both the figures.
handles, the beam being provided with the usual drag-iron at its front end, and at its rear end with bracesfor the support of the "handles, said braces being provided with a series of holes in their lower ends, by means of which the rear end of the beam may be raised or lowered, if desired.
0 O are the shovels, which are of usual construction,- they beingfp'rovided with staples,
,which embrace thejfisftandards, to which they are secured by means'z'oflkeys driven between the edges of said standards and the .end of the staple, and also with'p'r'oj ections upon their rear surfaces, which come in contact withthe sides of the standards, and which, when the ushovel is keyedfirmiy to such stands, pre- -ve'nt the possibility of it's being turned away from its vertical or its proper position.
D D are the standards or hangers,to which the .shovel's are secured, as above described,w'hich standards are made of wrought-iron or any 7 other suitable material, and are bolted to'the beam and secured in. their position by braces E- E in the usual manner.
F is a colter, which may be of wrought-iron or steel, and it consists of a plate of thin metal of, say, ten to twelve inches .in length by six to eight in width, and having its lower forward corner cut away, so as to form a segment of a circle at that point, to serve as the cuttingedge of such colter.
G is the arm or hanger, to which the colter is attached. It is constructed of a bar of iron with a slot or loop in its upper end, by which it is secured to.the beam at theplow by means of an eyebolt, which passes over a bolt pass- .ing through said beam, the eyebolt being provided with a nut, which screws down upon A is the beam of the plow, and B B are the the hanger. From that portion of the hanger constituting the loop or slot which is used for regulating the distance at which the colter shall run from the'sho'vel, as well as from theof metal, bent to the form of three sides of a square. These clamps inc-lose the standards, and the brace-rods pass through them, and are fastened by two nuts, I, placed one in front and the other in rear, so that by means of the nuts and clamps the standards maybe readily adjusted.
One of the advantages which arises from my method of constructing the plow-shovels is that they may be made at the factory and sent out into the country and placed upon the plow with the certainty of their fitting upon the arms, which will avoid the necessity'of transporting the plow to the factory or theshop for the purpose of having it furnished with new shovels, as the owner can always do it himself, and thus save much time and expense.
, 'aving thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 18-
1. The arrangement of the transversely-adjustable colter or cutter F with reference to the beam of the plow and shovel G, substan tially as shown and described.
2. In combination with the beam and standards, the brace-rods H, clamps I, and nuts I, arranged substantially as and for thepurpose set forth. 1
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL MATER.
