Description
WILLIAM BARTON, 0F TROY,-NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 82,678, dated.' October 6, 1868.
IMPRQVED SLAT-MATTING FOR GARS, Gto.
@its flgetule aferra in in time ttters zrtmt mouthing part tf tige same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAYCONCERN:
Be it known that I, .WIL'LIAM BARTON, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented a new and improvedlFlexible Slat-Matting for Railroad-Cars and other-purposes; and I do hereby declare' that the following is a full, clear,'and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 'forming part of thisspeci cation, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of my improved Slat-matting. .7
Figure 2 is a detail plan view, onv an enlarged scale. of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to' certain improvements upon the flexible Slat-matting for which Letters Patent were granted to me on.the third day of March, 1868.
'And the present invention consists in such an arrangement of the cords or strings by which thevvarious slats are connected into aflexible matting that, by winding the string around itself, or by tying knots into the same, the buttons or washers for holding the slats the requisite distance apart maybe dispensed with, the said knots or windings being the substitutes for the said buttons orwashers.
In this manner, a much better ilexible matting can be produced than that which has the buttons.
A. A, in the drawing, are the slats. The same are made of wood or other suitable material, and are perforated forgthe reception of 'the cord or string B. V
This cord, string, chain, or other ilexible fasteningdevice, is drawn through all the slats that are required' for one mat, and is between every two slats formed into a knot, or so wound as to hold such two slats the requisite distance apart.. p
The forming of the knot or protuberance can be produced in many different ways. In the drawing, it is represented as being formed by the line a being drawn straight through all the slats, while the line is also drawn through the same, near a, and wound around a, between every two slats, as shown.
This arrangement will do away with the washers or buttons heretofore used. Y
It can be produced by many different modifications, and I do not confine myself to one particular modification and manner of forming the knots or protuberances. l
The strings to one matting may all be separate, or may be all connected into one single piece, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A iiexible Slat-matting, consisting of the slats A and flexible lines B, the knots or protuberances for keeping the slats apart being formed by the/said lines B, as set forth. WM. BARTON.-
