Beit known that I, ALBERT SAUVNDERS, of Nashua, in 'the county of Hillsborough, and vStute of New Hampshire, have linvented s new and useful or improved/Reel, or apparatus for spooling or winding yarn or thread'from a. skein 'and Ido hereby declare the same to be fully described-in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of whioh d Figure 1 denotes o eide elevation, and y :Figure 2 a longitudinal section of u 'reel constructed in accordance with my invention.

I i The'object of my invention is= to produce o reel which shall be adopted not only to receive skeins of yarn' of -different sizes, but one hzwirg its arms so oonetructmi that, while theymsntain the'ysrns at aprope'r degree 'of' tension, either of' them 'may beocaused to .yield under sny undue strain on the yarn, and thereby prevent such yarn frotnbeing broken. v

lIn the said drawngs,A denotes a base or table, from or near one end of which a standard, B, extends 'upward in a vertical direction. The said' standard B supports s. shsft, C, which extends horizontally through it, andis nired thereto, -as seen in fig. 1.* On a journal of this shaft s. hub, F, is secured, by means of a nut, E. i This hub consists of tvso recessed'or chambered plates, a b', placed side by side, there being within the chambers', within such plates, a spiral spring, d', which goes around guide-wheels, e e, andhas'one end attached te one plate, and-thether to the other plete. G denotes a spindle, which projects upward from'the base, A, and carries e spool or bobbin, H, upon its upper end, the whole'bei'ng as shown'in iig. 1. This bobbin is to reeeive'the yarn or thread as it is wound from the reel. The winding of the yarn or thread upon bobbins, previous to the weaving of it into cloth, is n. wellkno'wn requirement,,and'involves the expenditure of much time. This operation is greatly facilitated by means of my improved apparatus. i l

` In using my improved apparntixs,l the yarn or` thread is` tov be put upon the reel in the usual manner, und 'one end of thtl yz'xrn or thread is to be applied to the periphery of the bobbin, land then the -mass of ,yarn is to be wound on th'bohbin in' the 'ordinary way. I

v The advantage of my improved reel isthrat it not only allows skeins of different sizes to be reel'ed upon it, but 'it maintains4 them upon the reel with a proper degree of tension, while at the same time "it readily adjusts itself to any inequalities orundue strsinvupon tho threads, which may arise from a. knot in the thread,'\or the croseng'of the coils, ora kink in the same. These causes, it is Well known, with the ordinary rcel, oftennproduce a breakage of the thread end the consequent loss of time. By the use of my machine, this evil is mostly if not entirely remedied.

i Furthermore, by making the hubintwo parts, connected by a. spring, es described, and extending a pair of 'tbearms from each of the said parts, I am enabled to move the arms of one-pair toward those of the other,` in order to more readily introduce-.thereel into a skein. A

I also claim the reel, as made with the self-adjusting rsdisl arms, and with the hub formed in two parte, a b', connected by a spring, and hsvinga pairot euch arms extended from each of the parts a( b', as specified.
