Description
S. RUTSCHIVIAN;- Meat Chopper,
I Patented Sept. 8,1868,
HER, w sumem N PETERS. F
SIGMUND RU'rsoHMA'N, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 81,824, dated September 1, 1868.
IMPROVE/1D MEAT-GHOPPING MAGHINB.
'fiittgtlgehnle rstemh it in than fitters new to making part sf the am.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, 'SIGMUND RUTSGHMAN, of the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and
.State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Means of Attaching the Slides to the Cross-Heads which carry the Gutters of Meatllhopping Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,-
clean and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which i i e Figure 1 represents a lohgitndinalview of the cross-head of a meat-chopping machine, exhibiting upon one end an external view of my improvement, and upon the other end a vertical section of the same; and
Figure 2 shows a transversesection of the cross-head, illustrating aninuer face viewof my.improvement- Similar letters of reference representing correspondingparts in both figures.
In meat-chopping machines, it is necessary to provide for the turning of the cross-head in such manner as to change the cutters from the vertical position in which they operate to a horizontal position, in which they aiford facility for the removal of the meat, and in which they can be conveniently sharpened.
Heretofore, this provision has been made by "the removal of pins, which, when inserted'through the crosshead, and through the sliding boxes,-wh ich'ar nttached 'to the cross-head for the purpose of working in the upright guides of themachine, holes provided in the cross-head for these pins injuriously wcakenedit, and the object of the invention is to make amoreefi'ective provision for the turning of the cross-head in the sliding boxes; and to this end, the invention consists in securing the cross-head in the sliding boxes insuch manner V as to prevent it from turning until it is desired to do so, by means of flanges permanently and rigidly attached to the cross-head, and pins -inserted,-in a direction parallel with the cross-head, through the boxes and through the said flanges, I a
I In order that others may be better enabled to understand the'construction and operation of my invention, 1 will proceed to describe it with reference to thedrawings.
A is the cross-head to a meat-chopping machine; 13 B are the sliding boxes; a'a the flanges, which are provided withhubs, C G, for the more effectual attachment of the same to thecross-headA, which may be done 'by means of set-screws, h h, or any other suitable security. ff are pins, passing through openings 0 and eon the sliding'boxes B and flanges a, for the purpose of locking the cross-headA, and preventing it from turning while the machine is in operation. Said pinsff are relieved of a'portion of the strain to which the actionof the machine subjects them by means of a shoulder-like projection on the inner face of the flange a, fitting into a corresponding recess in the sliding box 13. e is an opening in the flange a, into which the pin f passes from the opening, 0, in the sliding box' 13, when it is desired to lock the cross-head A at right angles with its natural position, for-the purpose of removing the meat, or for any other purpose, an illustration of which is represented in red outlines in fig. 2. r i v The operation'of this invention is performed by withdrawing the .pinsff from the openings e e, and giving the cross-head A a quarter turn, when the'pins ff are inserted into the openings or holes 0 e.
By means of this invention, the drilling of holes through the centre of the cross-head A is obviated, thereby giving to the said cross'head more strength, and the locking-pins ff, being located further from the centre of oscillation, do not yieldto the knives so much play, to the same amountof wear, as by the means now used.
What I claim as my invention, and desireto have secured by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the cross-head and sliding hoxes of a meat-chopping machine, of flanges at a, per
manently secured to the cross-head, and of the pins inserted through the said flanges and the sliding boxes,
substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
' SIGMUND RUTSCHMAN.
