Letters Patent No. 80,132, dated July 21, 1868;.'
IMPROAVIED TABLE FOR GOMPRESSES.
@be 5:11am: nomi in in thse'rttn' afsnt mit 'sinking part nf fige zum.
Be it known that I, HENRY A. Bunn, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, 'and -State of New York, .have invented a new and improved Table for Compresses; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention 'consists in so constructing and arranging the table or'platenhof zlfeompl'ess,y
that, with it, cotton and other goods that have been previously pressed or put up in bales,4ca.n be again com-V pressed without removing the hoops or bauds of the bales.
It has heretofore been the practice, where any goods are to be compressed or re-prssed to same bulk in shipping, to entirely remove the bands-ninth' which the bales were fastened when they were pressed.;
In order to avoid this unnecessary inconvenience and expense, I have constructed an improved platen, represented in the drawings, 'in whichi Figure 1 is a front elevation,
Figure 2 a side sectional elevation, and
Figure 3 a. horizontal section, the latter being taken in line z x of figs. 1 and 2.
E represents the cylinder, Fthe ram, D D the guide-rods, and B the head-block ofl the press, .allof .the usual form. 4 A "Y The platen that I use, in the construction and operation of which consists my invention, is formed of three parts, viz, a. bottom piece, A, provided with a series of wedge-shaped inclines, a a a, and supported upon the ram F; set of blocks or bearing-pieces, C C, lying side by side upon the bottom piece, as` shown in Afigs. 2 and 3, v
and forming the vfloor of the, platen, each one Ybeing provided on 'its under side with inclines c c, corresponding with and fitting into those of the'botto'rn piece; and a. set of screws, II H H, one to each block, C C, by which the blocks or bearing-pieces can be moved endwise upon the bottom piece.' i
As the screws force the bearing-pieces C C back or forth, the inlines c c sink'into the recesses of the bottom piece or rise on Vtheinclines a a, carrying thebearing-pieces up or down without aecting their horizontality.
The mode of using my invention is as follow s:,The press is run down, and the bale placed on the bearingpieees C C, &c. When .the rope or band rests on one of these bearing-pieces, that `one islowered by means of the screw H, and therope or band left free to draw' through. This adjustment is made for each band while the press is rising: When the requisite pressure is :1ttained,'tlie bands are tied, and thepresselorvered; the bale-is then thrown out, andthe press is ready for another operation. I
Ido not confine myself to this specific means of moving these bearing-pieces, as it may be done by shoving the same to one side, by dropping the same, or by rotating it, or other obvious means. i l
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The-comhination of thc bottom piece, A, having the nelines a a a, with the bearin'g-pieces C C having the inclines-c c c, -when the parts are constructed to operate substantially in the manner -and for the purpose set forth. v
HENRY Ar BURR.
