AIIlIIPIOVEIZIENI IN TOBACCO-BOXES.

,ljO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. BULL, of New Baltimore, in thecounty of Greene, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,
- reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is au edge'vicw of my improved tobacco-bcx, showing the hinge.
Figure 2 is across-section of the same, taken through the line a: x, tig. 1.
Figure 3 is a 'cross-section of the same, taken through the line y y, g. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of ro-und or oval tobacco-bones, spectacle-cases, &c., in such a way that lthey may have no sharp corners, edges, or projections to out or wear the pocketof the person carrying them; and it consists in the construction of the hinge, and inthe manner in which it is attached to the body of thebox, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the bottom, and B i's the top or cover of the box. The parts A and B maybe round or oval, and their edgesare turnedl or swaged up, as shown. G is the hoopor body of the box, which is fitted into the swage of the bottom, A, where it is secured in place by solder, in the ordinary mannen The swage of the cover B fits upon thevupper edge of the hooprC, when the box is closed. The middle part of the body Cis swaged, as
shown in figs. I, 2, and 3, which savage may be formed upon the outer or-inner side of saidhoop C, andmay extend wholly or partially around the box, as may be desired. I prefer to form the sw'age upon the outside of the hoop C, and .extendiit entirely around the box, as forming a neater and more tasteful appearance.l D'is the hinge-strap, which passes around the pivoting-wire E, and the ends of which are soldered to the swaged edge of' the cover B. The ends of the hinge-wire`E rest in the concavity4 of lthe swage in the hoop C, where theyare securely soldered in place. The wire E'i's of such a size, and the strapD is so bent around it, that the projecting part of the hinge may exactly correspond with and be acontinua'tion of` the swage of.the hoop C, as shown in figs. I and 2. x
By this construction, the outer surface of the entire box is leftpsmooth, havingv no angles, edges, or projections to cut or wear the pocket ot' the person carrying it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent--` The hinge D E, constructed and connected with the swaged hoop C and cover B, substantially as yherein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
, The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 5th day'of May, 1868.
` GEORGE M. BULL.
