Description
gleiten tutes. aini @fitta DAVID J. BARNETT, OF ALBION, INDIANA.
Letters .Patent No. 80,115, dated July 21, 1868:
Ill/.[IROVFD SAW-GUMMING- DEVICE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: e
Be it known `that I, DAVIDJ. BARNETT, of Albion, in the county of Nob1e,. and State of Indiana, have invented ,a new and useful Device for Gumming'Saws; and -I do hereby-declare the` following -to be a clear and exact description thereof, suiicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to 4 fully understand and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, and in which l Figure l is a plan of my saw-gumming device. V Figures 2 and 3 are front and rear end views in line a: x, fig. 1, the die and plates being set for gumming y circular saws. V i
` Figures 4 and 5 are similar views in the `small line, iig. 1,`the dieand platesfbeing 'set for gumming l straight saws.
l Like letters indicate like parts in the several gures.
y My invention is an improved device for gumming straight or circular saws, and` consists in providing a sliding ,die-post with removable dies, and operating said post by a cam, and also holding the saw between removable plates, whereby either a circulaior straight saw may be readily and quickly gummed by merely changing the die and plates, as will be hereinafter more fully described. i
'In the drawingse A' represents the bedplate, of suitable form and construction, and having at oneend abed, B, risingangularly therefrom.
To the inner end of this bed, 13,1 secure longitudinal pieces,fg, to which are connected transverse pieces or uprights, F G, which point'inwardly, and allow a space to be between themf. A space is thus left between the piecesf and g, and between the pieces'F Gand the inner face of the rest, B. This space is adapted 'to receive die-plates H, which are constructed-of flat pieces of suitable metal, and
f have openings of size and form corresponding to the dies E, which will be hereafter referred to.
l The inner face of the bed is grooved vertically, and has its sides taper inwardly. TheV groove receives a.
plate, I, which is constructed similarly to dieplate H, only that its sides are bevelled, and form, with the l groove, a dove-tail joint. l
l The piecesfg receive screws L z', so as to bear against the plate II, and hold the saw tobe gunnned between it and the Aplate I.
C represents the slide, whichy encircles the bed-plate A, and has longitudinal motion to and" from the bed, B. On this slide I secure the die-block or head D, which is fitted to hold the dies E.
The inner face of the head I) is perforated, as at c and d, to receive the, stems or Shanks of the dies E,
r which dios should be of form corresponding to that of the spaces between the teeth of either circular or long saws, 4as shown iugs. 2, 3,4, and 5. I p
J is a cam, pivotcd to the bed-plate A at the end opposite to the bed B, by means of a. pin or journal, z'. An opening is made in the periphery of this cam to receive a handle,K, whereby the cam may bc readily operated, and thereby advance the slideC, and thus carry the dieE towardsthe plate I through the space between. the pieces FG. l
The operation is as follows: v
When a circular saw is to begummed, the die-plates H I areplaced into thc-space at the 4inner end of the restB, and have the openings-face downwards, as shown in iig. 3. The saw is introduced into this space between the plates, and secured in position by means of the screws lz z'. The die E is inserted into the lower opening, d, 0f the tie-head. l
The cam Jis now rotated, so that it will advance the slide O.
The die passes through the opening in plate H, and as it enters the opening in the plate I, it outs away or gums the saw.
The motionof the cam being reversed, the slide C is free to be withdrawn. The saw may be shifted, and another cut be made, and the operation thus continued until the whole saw is gummed. A
To gum long or straight saws, the position of the plates H I must be reversed, that is, their openings face upwards, as shown in g. 5, and it is necessary that the openingszin the plates should correspond with the pecu- A liar die required, consequent to the shape of the teeth in long saws di'ering from those in circular saws.
The dieis placed in the upper opening, c, of the die-block, and the saw being introduced, and retained iu place by the screws h z', passing through the upper openings in the pieces F G, the cam J is rotated, the die advanced, and the saw; is gummed the same as in the previous operation. v n
It will be seen that by means of different dies and die-plates, any kind of/ saws may b e readily and quickly gummed. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The saw-gumming device, consisting of bed-plate A, bed B, slide C, die-block D, removable dies E, removable slotted plates H I, screw-plates F G, and-'cam J, constructed, arranged, andoperating substantially as rep-v .resented and described. .i
The above specification of my device for gummin'g saws signed this eleventh day of December, 1867.
