Description

Letters Patent No. 79,977, dared July 14, '1868.
MPRovEn BREAST-STRAP.
'ro-ALI. WHOM IrMAY CONGERN: 1
' Beit known that I, A. Ii. HILL, of Decatur, in the conn'ty of Macon, and State ofv Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement'in Breast-Straps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
.exact descriptionthereoQ-which will enablefothrers skilled -in the art tolmake and use the same, reference being had tothe Vac cvonnpanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
f This invcntion'relates to a' new and useful improvement inVbreast-straps, whereby several advantages are v'obtained over'ithose in present use, to wit;`
First, much-:greater strength anddurability; second, the avoidance of wear by the friction ofthe rings of Vthe necklyoke onthe straps; and third, a' moreready means ofdetaching them from the harness and neck-yoke.
`In-the accompanying'sheet of drawings- AIigure 1 represents a'perspectiveviewof my invention applied to a'team in harness. Figure 2, a detached 'plan or top view of a breast-strap.
= Figure 3, a side view of the same. s
Similar letters o i` reference indicate corresponding parts.
4B B represent two hooks, Yof any suitable' metal, cachot' which is provided withla link, b, to prevent the casual detachment ofsaid'liooks from the rings of the' harness in which theyl are fitted. These Ilinks are fitted in the ute-r parts of the hooks, so that their inner ends will bear against the inner parts bf the bool/is..
C C represent two leatherstraps, one end o f which is rmly attached to the shanks of the ,hooks B Bby l rivets a, -(sce figs-2 and lvTvhe opposite ends of these straps C O are attached by rivets a to the exterior snrface ofra metal V-shapved bar, D, which surface is provided with ribs, d, to sink into the leather, .C C, when the former is riveted to the latterj said ribs relieving the rivets a of strain, andiforming a {irmer attachment lofthe bar D to the-leather straps.
These` leather straps may be composed of `one piece of leather, bent` at its centre around the bar D. The
4hooks B B,- it will be seen, cnrvc ontward from the strap, and then extend towards the -bar D, as show-n clearly -in fig'. 2.
A breast-strap is attached to the llames ofi.' each collar, the hooks B being fittedv in the rings of the harness,
`as, shown at a, fig. 1, and the rings'fc `of the-"neck-yohe fitted on the bars Dv of the breast-straps.
The metal bar D eii'ectnally prevents the rings c ofthe neck-yoke from wearing or injiiring the straps C. 'By this arrangement it will be seen that a very strong and durable breast-strap is obtained, as each horse has t'wo straps attached, one Ito each haines of his collar, whereas with the ordinary breast-straps each horse is providedwith one'onl'y, and as no connectionsare made directly with the leather straps, the latter are not silbjected to the wear, as is now the case, by being passed through rings either en thehames or neck-yoke.
The breast-,straps also may be very rcadilyattached to the neck-yoke and haines, and as readily Vdetached therefrom. s 4
Having thus described `my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,` isl. The breast-strap, constructed :ts-described, and consisting of the strap C, to which thel plate D, having ribs d, is rigidly secured, when said strap is provided-at each end witha hook, B b, all arranged and operating as andufor the purpose described. i l i 2. I further claim the ribs d on the exterior` surface of thc-Jaar D, when used in combination with* and applied to the strap or straps C, for the purpose substantially as set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 6th day ot Decembcr,1867.
