TO ALL WHOM IT MAY .CONCERN:

Beit known that I, CA LEB FosTnn, of Wappingers Falls, in the county of Dutehess, and State of New York, have invented certain ,new and useful Improvements in Enamelled Metal Combs, as a new article of manufacture; and I do hereby'declaie the following to he a full, clear, and exactdeseription of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying'drawings, making a part of-my specification, in which Figure 1 represents astraight comb, and

Figure 2 represents a round or curved comb. I

Letters Patent of the United Stateshave heretofore been granted for enamefld steel combs, whichnas my invention; but the requirements of the trade demand that a cheaper article should be made, whieh,'thongh not so serviceable, still answers a purpose'oflcom'merce. I 7

And my present invention consists-in the production of. a metal enamelled comb, the base of which shall be of metal of any known him], (other than steel,) and enamelled to represent or imitateamate rial of which it. is not composed. r I

If the comb be straightfas shown at A, fig. 1, then it shoulllhave a back, strip, or saddle, a, .upon it,-to

give it sufiicient rigidity and strength. If round, asat B, fig; 2 it need not be backed.

I take sheet brass, iron, 'tin, or any other rolled metal, andhaving, punched the teeth therein, and. backed it, if straight, or curved or bent it, if 3 mum rolled or smoothed it, if found necessar and formed it into a comb, it is then enamelled all over, in the usual way of enam'elling, and so that it shall representor imitate a material of which the conb is not made. i K I I am aware that portions of a metal comb haiie been engraved'or chased, an d enamelled in the so sunken portions; but such combs still look lilre what they really are; viz, a metal comb, and I lay no claim. to any such. I enamel my combs all over, so as to conceal the material of which they are made, and represent or imitate something entirely (lilierent fromthat ofavhichthey are made; as, 'for instance, in imitation of hard rubber,

The combs, after the enamclling, or in the process, of 'enamelling, may be ornamented in anywf the usual ways of ornamenting on or in enamelletl surfaces. 7 l I Having thus fully described my invention, what-I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as a new article of manufacture, is- I v A comb of any other sheet metal than steel, and enamelled all over so as to represent or imitate a material of which it is not made, but of \vhichazomhs generally are marle, as herein described and represented.
