g game gram 138mm: @1131 THOMAS STONE, OF PLAINFIELD, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND VIRGIL H. LYON, OF SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 79,410, dated June 30, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARS, WAGONS, AND OTHER VEHICLES- TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS STONE, of Plainfield, in the county of Hendricks, and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in" Cars, Wagons, Boxes, and other Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improved wagon-box, the section being taken through the line a: z of fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a bottom view of the same.
Figure 3 is a cross-section of the box, through the line y y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to accomplish the discharging or dumping, so called, of the contents of 'a wagon-box, when such contents are of a loose character, as sand, coal, and the like.
The invention consists in forming the bottom of the box of shuttcrs'or leaves, a, extending across the box B, and pivoted ti) the same by means of journals or gudgeons, working in holes in the wagon-box, as shown. These leaves are connected with each other, and with the levers It and g, that actuate them, by means of a rod, 5, and the staples and rings 1', in a manner similar to that by which the slats of window-blinds are operated.
The leaves a a'a, 8m, are held in a horizontal position, suitable for sustaining the contents of the box, by means of rods e e, which are let into grooves in the inner side of the box A, and'are flush with the surface of the said inner side, when not actuated outward by means of the levers c c, as will be now described.
The rods e c are thrown out from their grooves by means of the levers c c and links 1: k. The rods are pivoted to these links and levers, as shown, and, when the slotted ends of the levers c c areaotuated forward by lever j, the said rods will be moved out from the grooves, and he brought under the leaves a a (1, thus holding them in their raised position. The lower end of the leverjis formed with a narrow neck and head, suitable for operating in the slotted endsff of. the levers c c, as shown.
.The links k k are pivoted to arms Z Z, allixed to thebox, and the lovers 0 c are pivoted to arms at d, afiixed also to the box.
The leverg is pivoted to an upright, n, and also to a link, It, which latter is pivoted to the rod b. The opposite end of the rod b is pivoted to a link, 0, which latter is pivoted to an arm, m, aflixed totheendboard of the box, as shown. I i v When the rods e e are thrown out, to sustain the weight of the leaves a a a, &c., said rods rest upon the cleats p p p, &c.', aflixed to the inner sides of the box, and having their upper ends flush with the grooves from which the rods emerge, so that the reds will be better able to. sustain the weight of the load resting upon the leaves a a a, do.
These cleats are in such a position as to not interfere with the downward movement of the levers in discharging the load.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A wagon-box, A, having the pivoted leaves a q a, &c., in combination with the rods e e and rod 6, cleats P p p, and lever-devices, for operating the said rods and leaves, all substantially as showa and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The levers j c a, rods e e, links I: k, substantially as shown and described, in combination with the leaves a a a and box A, all substantially as and for thepnrpose shown and described. I
3. The lcversjj, in combination with the rod 6, leaves a a a, and box A, substantially as and for, the'purpose shown and described. i
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 10th day of March, 1868. i
THOMAS STONE.
