IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, ROBERT O. LOWREY, of Salem, in the county of Washington, andState of New York,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watcr-PrbofiBoots, Shoes, and similar articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to. the accompanying drawings, making pai't of this specification, and to the letters ofrei'erenco marked thercon,'lil e letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.

To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

My invention relates to water-proof boots, shoes, slippers, and similar articles; and consists in manufacturing them of leather, cloth, and paper, or of leather, or cloth, or paper, or of all of three or two of these materials, when the same shall, consist of a water-proof fabric, and so made by the proccss'patented to me by Letters Patent, dated the 10th day of December, 1867, for improved composition of matter for the manufacture of water-proof paper and other articles. i

In the drawings- Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are views of shoes and similar articles made of one of my materials, and of different combinations of the same. I

I I manufacture my water-proofshoein any one ofthe following ways: First, as shown in fig. 1, which represents a. shoe made cfoloth and paper, the cloth being on the outside, and broken away on the side to show the paper. In this case, eithcrthc' paper or the cloth, or both, are made water-proof, by the process above mentioned, and the cloth and paper are united by any suitable cement or gelatinous compound, or not, as may be desired; or the shoe may be made entirely of water-proof paper prepared as above mentioned, and as represented in fig. 2. When made in this way, both the sole and the heel may also be made of the same material; or the shoe may be made with the materials combined, as shown in fig. 3, when the cloth is on the inside and the paper on the outside, and the two united by a suitable gelatinous compound or other cement; or the cloth may been the outside, and have a water-proof papcrsurface on the inside; or the shoe may be made with the materials combined, as shown in fig. 4, in which the inside is shown with a portion broken away, the whole outside being of leather, and lined with the cloth and paper, in about the proportions shown in the figure, and united by a gelatinous compound or other cement;- or the shoe may be made as shown in fig. 5, in which'the leather, paper, and cloth may all be of the size of the upper, 'or the paper'may be simply interposed as a lining between the cloth and paper around the lower portion of the upper. The leather, cloth, and paper may be united by cement or not, as desired; or the shoe may be made as in fig. 6, Sheet No. 2, of the water-proofed cloth, with a w'ater proefed paper lining or not, as desired. All of these shoes I make with watcr-proofed or paper lining in or on the interior of the soles, asstated hereafter.

p In all these modifications, combinations, and arrangements, I employ the fabrics after they have been water-proofed, or after one ortwc of them have beenwater-proot'ed; or they may be water-proofed after being manufactured into the shoe or similar article The fabrics used are those that have been water-proofed by my patented process above mentioned, my object being to produce from these fabrics a watcr-proof shoe or coveringand protection for the foot.

-'.[he cement I employ consists the gelatinous compound described in my said patent, and the treatment is with the astringent solution mentioned in the same patent.

In the manufacture of my water-proofshoe, I make the soles as well as the uppers water-proof, by inserting in the same oneor more thicknesses of either of my watcr-prooi'ed fabrics.

Having thus described my invention, what'I claim, is-

A water-proof shoe or covering for the foot, when manufactured of cloth, paper, or leather, made waterproof by my patented process herein mentioned, or of either of these materials, or of any combination of the same, substantially as herein described, as a new article of manufacture.
