Description
J-OS'EPH, WA REN, OF Loni, 01110;
Letters' Patent No. 77,227, dated Ami 28, 1868."
IMPROVEMENT n coinseizures.
this Stimul rennet ta in thrsifietms fittest tut making partnf ligature To ALL' WHOM IT'MAUY consumer Be it known thatI, JOSEPH-WARREN, of Lodi, in the county of Medina, and State 'of Ohio, have invented v I certain new and useful Improvements inv Oorn-Shellers'; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull'and specification, in whichi Figure 1 is a side view of the inaehin Figure 2 is a transverse section; Like'letters of referepce'refer to'like parts in the views. I This shellsr consists of the case A, (fig. 1,)mounted upon and secured to the legs B. In this case ishunga disk,'O, (fig. 2,) upon the shaft D, having its bearings in the centre of the case; On one of the protruding ends of said shaft is keyed a fly-wheeh E, and upon the opposite end a crank, F, by which the machineis operated. One face of the disk referred to is thickly studded with teeth, G, whereby the grain is shelled from the cob, as will hereafter be shown. p
H is the hopper, into which, the ears are thrown, I the spout, from which the corn flows, and J the opening from which the echo are discharged from the machine.
I am aware that a corn-sheller having a case,.teothed disk, hopper, wheel, and crank, all constructed and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this 7 arranged in a. manner analogous to this, is nowin use, but the case of the machine referredto is made with-a full convex side, as indicated by the dotted line 'a, thereby giving alarge amount of room in and around the shaft D. i
I11 o quen e of this great space the cobsaecumulate about the shaft, and by theirrlodgmen't there obstruct the proper working of themachine. .The cobs, unless removed, are more or less ground up or broken, and the dust and fragments drop through the spout along with the shelled corn, rendering it dirty and unmarketable unless cleaned.
.To avoid this defect of the machine, 1 construct the side facing of the dishes represented in the drawing,
in which it will'be seen that the side, instead of being ofv a uniform convex surface, is depressed at the points x around the shaft, thereby contracting the room to a much less holding-capacity, so thatthe cobs can find no room to accumulate, but are carried ofl along, through, and out of the tube J. I I
This tube, as will be seen,'is simply a swell around near the margin of the side, extending from' the hopper around to the. opening K in the side of the case, forming a'semicircular channel of only sufficient capacity toallow the passage of aeingle cob ate time, thereby preventing them from becoming crossed ancltumbledabout in the central portion of the case and around the shaft, as above said;
By this peculiar -shape given to the side of the case, no accumulation or lodgment of the cobs in and around about the shaft can takeiplace, hence the grain will at all times come from the machine free of dirt and fragments of cob. The machine never becoming obstructed, no time is lost in removing he obstruction; w h so often results in the use of the ordinarysheller. a v
What I-claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The case A, havingone of its sides'provided with a circular depression around the axis of the disk, in com-.
bination with. the segmental discharging-tube J inthe manner and for th p w specified;
