ABe it known' that I, vTHDMAS A. SEARLE, of Providence, in the` county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and improved Wrench; and`I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, l. andexact description thereoiivhieh will enable others skilled in thefartto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved method of constructing Wrenches for turning nut-s and screwbolts, whereby the same are more simple in' their construction, and whereby, also, the saine arcnnore certainand reliable in their action, and are more readily adjusted to nuts and screw-bolt heads of diiierent sizes.
It consists of'l a. segment of a a geared' pinion, attached to the shank Working in ageared rack on apart of v 'one of the jaws of the wreneh,rn'lherehy, bythe bending of t-lie'jaws in one direction, the jaws of the Wrench are closed upon'a nut o r other object between said jaws; it consists also of a loose collar on the shank of the Wrench, forced against the jaws,.thereby holding said jaws in any required position with respect to the handle of the wrench.' A is the fixed jaw of them-erich. a is the movable jaw. al is a pin in jaw A, on which the movable jaw moves. v a is n pivot 'on which jaw A turns. H is the shank of the wrench. B is a fixed-pinion on the end of the'shank of the wrench. D is a movable collar on the shank H. S'is aspring. a nut )rhich'secures' the shank H to the handle H.
The shank H is'of the same general' form, and is Vmade of the same material ois-the sha-nh of monkeywrenches now in common use, and is secured to the handle H by the nut 71.-. Said shank H has upon the upper end of the same, either a. part thereof, or rigidly secured thereto, the segment of aspur-geared pinion, B, to

Said jaw A is provided, on the inside, with`a groove orslot, to receive the arin ot' the movable jaw e. The movable jaw a. has an arm at right angles to itself', extending towards the jaw A, said arm being either a part of the said jow e,.or rigidly attached thereto, said arm being fitted so as to slide in the slot inthe jaw A, so that the jaw c may approach nearer to'or be moved further from the fixed jaw A. Said'arm of the jaw a is provided on the under siden'ith teeth, so as toform a rack, 'said teeth Yengeing with the teeth on the segment B. Said arm of the jaw a has a slot through the saine, so that it will slide freely over a strong pina1, attached to the j'nv A, so` that by turning the. jaw A to the right, -upon the pivot a2, es shown, the teeth on the segment B will' force thejarf a, through the teeth on the arm of Vsaidjawn, towards the jow-A, or close thejaws ofthe wrenchby the reverse operation, moving the said jaw a from the jaw A, thereby opening the jaws of the wrench. Upon the shank H is a loose collar, D, the upper end of the saine resting against the lower part of thejaw A, said collar D being heid Aagainst said a by a spiral spring, S, or its equivalent, restingon a hongo on the lower end of the collar D, and against the handle H, as4 shown,the object oi which is to prevent the jaws of the Wrench from' turning on thepivot a1 when not moved by the hand, and to keep the same in a vertical position, as shown, when not in use. The operation is readily7 seen from the above description, and from the drawing, the jaws A- md a beg ciosed or opened by turning the said jaws on the pivot al.
