IMPROVEMENT IN FUR MUII'LENRS.
TO ALL WHOMv IT MAY CONCEILN:
Be it known that we, G. W. PARKER and W. F. PARKER, of Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo county, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fur Mufliers for gentlemen; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon making part of this specification, and in which-.-
Figure I is an inside view. y
Figure 2 is a top view.
Figure 3 is a side view.
Figure 4 is a view of mulier on the head.
The nature of our invention consists in the manner of fastening the support or head-bands to fur mulers, which renders the muier more convenient, serviceable, and comfortable to the wearer, and easy of adjustment at all times. I y I It is well known that in the ordinary method of fastening a muller upon the neck or over the coat-collar, by mere hooks and eyes in front, the top ofthe article sometimes becomes deranged by the hat or cap, and in very few cases only can the wearer prevent the muier from dropping down in some measure, and thus expose the head between the hat and thev mutlier. In our invention this is prevented by the head-bands, which are securely fastened to the upper edges ofthe muiiler, and can be properly adjusted, so that when the hat or cap is in its proper place, it will come-closely down to the fur, and thus keep the air outfrom the head. In the old method, if the wearer should desire to loosen the front, either from beingtoo warm, or from any other cause, the whole article must be removed; whereas, in our method, there is a great and decided advantage in the head bands, because the front may be left entirely free, and yet. the muffler will protect the backfand sides ofthe head and the ears, which are more susceptible of cold than any other part, and thus the person can allow the throat and neck to be free, if desirable, as it is sometimes, or, if the front fastening should, by any accident, be broken, yet the muiiler can beworn and protect the person. In horseback-riding this method of fasteningis invaluable, because, shouldthe rider have an unruly animal, requiring both hands to manage, andlfrom exercise the rider be overheated, the front fastening may be loosened, and the head and ears be protected; whereas, in the old method, it will readily be seen the rider must either be closely muffled, and suffer' from overheating, or release the muffler entirely, and have the cold air upon his head and ears.
In the drawings, 'A is the fur muiiier, which is cut in such form as to protect entirely the neck and ears,
and so meeting in front as to entirely protect the ears'. The fur has a quilted lining, B, which may be made of silk or other suitable material. D D are head-bands, which may be made of ribbon-or other suitable material, and arranged at right angles to each other. These bands are s0 arranged that when the muffler is applied-to the head, as shown in iig. 3, itwill be found that the point'of attachment of the ribbon or band D to the muflier, is immediately in front of the ears, while the band D will be immediately above the centre of the neck.
The great advantage of our form of muffler, and the arrangement of the head-bands, will readily suggest itself to any one familiar 'with the ordinary straight furmuiller now in use. The bands keep the muHier always close to the neck and ears, possessing all the advantages of a ho'od, and still in no manner interferes with the hat or` cap of the wearer.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim therein as new, 1s-
As a new articleof manufacture, the -fur muffler A, and lining B, when the same are oonstructed'in the form shown, and provided with head-bands D D', and the Whole is so constructed and arranged as 4to operate substantially asA described and for the purpose specified.-
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing' witnesses.
