Description

`WILLlAM H..RODGERS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 77,917, dated ilfay 12, 1868.`
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-BURNERS.,
ttr vSxinmli nume tu in ligure lrittts 'ntcnt mit noting niet et tige stint. r
'ro Am'. when lI'r MAY coNoERN; y
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM II. RODGERS, of Brooklyn, D.,) in the county of Kings, und State of blew York, have invented, made, and applied to use, o. `certain new ond useful Improvement in Gus-Burners; und. I ldo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, `wherein Figure 1 is n. vertical section, of about twice the'usual dimensions, of n. gas-burner, with my improvement `in position for supplying gos to the usuel flame. 4
Figure 2 is o. similar view, in position for supplying gas to the smell igniting-ame, und
Figure 3 is a. perspective view of the plug ofthe cock, detached.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.; u
Gas-burners havebef'ore'been made in which o; small jet is allowed to burn continuously, and this ignites the main jet, Vwhen the gos foi-'thc same is turned on, but this small jet makes the burner very hot, 4in `consequenee oi' being confined, and coming into contact with the conducting metal of said burner.; besides this, the smell {lnme belojw the large flame produces o movement'n the air that tends tov disturb the burning of the main flame. The long tube to this smnlljet quickly becomes filled with dirt, and the burner is blackened with smoke.
The nature of my said invention consists in-:t gos-burner 'provided with en igniting-jetin combinationwith n. cock that is constructed so that when the main jet is burning the figniting-jet shall' be extinguished, and'V when the cock is turned to extinguish the main jet, the gos shall drstj be passed thro'uglrthe small igniting-jet, in order that that may be lighted, to continue a. ilame that shall in turn light the main jet, when the cock is turned for that purpose, und for extinguishing'the igniting-jet.
In the drawing, a is the screw of the burner, to connect with any usual pipe; b `is the barrel, and c the plug of the cock; CZ is n pipe to the ordinary burner e, and f is o. chember, with o. smell opening, z', for the i'gniting-jct.
` g is a. cup orsurrounding shield, to prevent currents of air blowing out the snm-ll jet, z'. j'flhe edges of this cup may be extended as arms to a. ring, zo, for holding n. glass or globe. Y ,i I
2 is the main gas-way of the plug c; 3 is aslot, allowing gas to poss (from a) to the groove 4, that runs nearly around the plug c; 5 is o, hole, communicoting to the chamber f; 6 is a. second` holo tol the fchomberj",` and 7 is :r dngpnol slot from the gos-way 2 on the surface of the pluge. i
When the gas-wey 2 is crosswise, as seen in iig. `2, th as passes along the slot 3 around the plug c in th groove 4, and, by the hole 5, `to the jet i, and the size of this jet z' muy be regulated by a'perforot'ed screw-plug, 8, acting as o. co'ek.
When the plug c is turned to light the jet e, the gosis allowed to pass thereto before the plein surface of the plug at the ends of the groove 4 closes' the hole 5, as seen in fig. 2'; hence the main jet e is lighted from the jct z' before the latter is extinguished.
When the cock is turned to shut o' the jet e, before the hole 2 comes erosswise of the moin gaslway, the end of the diagonal slot 7 has coincided with' Vthe hole 6, allowing a sudden and full supply of gas to pass in to 'the chn'mberf, and jet out at 1', to be'ignited by the main jet c, and the further turning ofthe plug celosos the pipe 6, allowing the supply to thejet z' only to continue through the slot 4. y p i The rcgulztting-screw e1' cock 8 allows the supply of gas to the jet z' to be rcgulatedaccording to the pressure, and the slots 3 and hence erm be sufficiently large to prevent their being ,obstructed by dirt or grease.
Non-conducting washers at 9 9 oid in' keeping the burner cool.'
What I claim, ond desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A 4 1. The cock c, formed with the gosways 2, 4, and 7, in combination with theopening and. pipes 5 and G, to supply gas to the chamberf und jet z', when the jet c is extinguished, the parts being arranged and acting v substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. 'lhe regulating-screw or cock 8, in combination with thejets z' and e, as and for the purposes set forth. In witness whereof', I hnvc hereunto set my signature, this twentieth Vdoy of November, A. D. 1867.
1 W-M. H. RODGERS.
