:MPRovED cARrRUQK# j i i v Specification forming part of: Letters Patent N 77,858, dated May 12,1868; antedated May 9, 1868.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, C. F. ALLEN, loi' Paw law, in the county of Van Buren and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Trucks arranged'for' six wheels; and I do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, "and exact description of the same, reference being had to theaunexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig.' 2 is a central, Vertical, and longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, and Fig. 4 is a plan.
The same letters are employed in all the gures inthe indication oi parts which are identical, o My improvements relate to the construction of a six-wheel truck for railroad-coaches. I embody in their construction some ot' the i'eaturesof' my improvements in trucks, as set forth in the specifications accompanying Letters Patent granted to me on the 24th-day ot' April, A. D. 1866, and on the 18th day of June A. D. 1867,130 which l make reference for the more full explanation of such parts as may be shown in the drawings hereto au- Y n'exed, and also in the patents cited, and not herein fully explained.
My improvements consist in constructing six-wheeled trucks, witha rigid frame 1naintaining the wheels in the same line at all times, but at thesame time enabling them to run over curves in the track by attaching flanges only to the rims ot' the outer wheels, the middle ones being flat on the periphery; also, in the mode of supporting the ear over the middle axle, so that the weight shall be equally distributed upon the three axles, and in balancing the ear over the center otl the middle axle, giving it, at the same time, lat# eral support, when needed, outside bt' thc middle wheels.
The lollowing description will enable persons skilled in the art to construct my imimproved six-wheeled truck.
ln the annexed drawings, six wheels are shown united in one truck., The outer ones A are formed with ilanges on the inner edges to keep them on the track. The two middle wheels A may be constructed without flanges. These Wheels are rigidly attached in the usualnianner to the. axles B', supported in journal-boxes of the Ordin ary construction, the
wholebeing united in a frame, C, constructed and braced, as fully set forth in the speciiication accompanying my patent of June 18, A.- l). 1,867, and as shown in the drawings. The,
Journal-'boxes are pressed down by a series of springs, l), placed above the frame, and which are united by the levers D', being connected by stirrups, in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 3. As the boxes have free play between their pedestals the wheels may accommodate themselves within thewlimits allowedby the tension of the springs to inequalities in the These` trucks being l surface of the track. placed under each end of the ear the latter is attached to them by a king-bolt passing, through the plate E, which is bolted to the top ot' a beam, F, supported by braces G Gr, connecting it with the swinging beams H, which are placed on each side ot', and equidistant from, the middle axle, and extend through and project beyond the frame C. The
lateral mot-ion ot' the caris controlled Within` limits iixed by the shoulders at 1I', which are' made to bear against the. frame, being proi tccted'by india-rubber orother springs to mitigate the shock which would otherwise be occasioned by the swinging ot the car from side to side. The swinging `beams H are placed between the transvers beams I I, the
latter being rigidly attached to the frame i frames are connected rigidly by means of the v beams (l, at cach end; also, by the transverse `beams l. i
What I claim as my invention, anddesire to secure by Letters' latent,fis-
1, Se supporting the end of a ear upon a. six-wheeled truck that the weight shall be` equally distributed upon all# the wheels by resting it upon a support over, but not upon,
l the middle axle, said support being sustained by springs placed on enoh sido of, and equidistnnt from, the middle axle, and the Whole weight; being transferred to the axles through a rigid frame, substantially `in the manner set forth.
2. In combina-tion with the beam F, the braces Gqand swinging beams H, placed ou each sido of the middle axle, and supporting upontheir outer ends the side bearing-blocks N, so as to balance the weight of the end of the car over the middl axlersubs tanti-ally in the manner set forth. Y
In tostimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
