IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES POR ATTACHING LABELS T0 NEWSPAPERS, dre.
dlgs Srliehnls :mmh it in tlmtttttfs atrut mit mating mnt .at tigt sume,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERNE Bc it known that I, JonN F. ZAcnAnIAs, of Leesburg, in the county of Loudon, and the State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machinery forvAttachng Labels upon Newspapers, Journals, Sac., by steam or other power; andI do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed dra\vings, making part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is'a face view of slotted rod P, detached.
Figure. 3 is .a longitudinal vertical section. l
A represents an oblong square frame; B B', two rollers, one at each end of frame A; C, a slatted carrier, the slats c c c, dac., being made of wood or other material, and fastened luponA the hands or straps C C', said v slatted carrier C having opening-sor vacancies D D, Snc., in it, wide enough to receive the paper, journal, dto.,
said slats running across the inside of frame A, the distance from one vacancy or opening, D, to the next opening, D, being exactly equal to thc circumference of 'the roller B. F is a box or feeder, with the folded papers orjourualsffffin it, having the outside measure equal to the width of frame A, the inside being equal to the op'enings or vacancies -D in the slatted carrier C.
On the side ol' frame A is placed my machine, patented'August 13, 1867, No. 67,833, with such changes in that patent as nre necessary to adapt it to the present xnacvaliine, and which changes are shown in these drawings by the letters H I J; said machine being represented in the drawings by the uprights GG. Rnnnihg trans. versely across the top of these uprights G G is a. shaft, H, restingirn .prper sockets or boxes. On one end of shaft H is a hand-wheel, represented in 'the drawings by the crank I. -Half way between the uprights G Gis the eccentric, J. Upon this works the' shaftK of sliding gate It, and scissors At the othervend of shaft H is the crank, N, which is connected to crank, O, by the connecting-rod P, said connectingfrodP having, run ning through its long diameter, for a distance of twice the length of cranks N orfO, a slot, P', which allows it to play upwards ox-.dowuwards upon .the pin P", thus giving to crank, 0,'a rotary motion in a reverse direction to crank, N; said pin P" being placed directly in a. line from centre of shaft Hand shaft O', and equidistant between the two shafts H and O. Shaft O' is supported h-y t'wo hrnckets, R R', vrunning out. from side of frame A. The pin P"stands at right angles with the connecting-rod P,'nnd is fastened upon the side of the fram'e rof machine G G. 0n thc left-houdend of shaft O is cog-wheel Q. At right angles with cog-wheel() is oog-wheel Q', turning upon a short shaft, S, standing out from' frame A. Cog-wheels Q and Q' play or work into one another. S is the point where counectingrod T works upon cog-wheel Q', and from thence conveys motion to crank, U, upon'roller B. V is an inverted U-shaped opening in lend of rod T, intended to allow roller B to remain .quiet for an instant, whilst the papers drop into openings D, and receive their directions under sliding gate L. .W is an original device, whereby I gain n rotary motion info.- reverse direction to cog-wheel Q', said device being placed equidistant from centre of shaft S- and centre of the shaft of roller B. X X are two caps over. shaft of roller B. X' X are two caps over shafts of roller B', inclined so that the papers, journals, 85o., may fall off from frame A. I Y Y are ears or projections rnnniiig inwards from frame A, for the slotted carrier C to play or slide upon. The devices P"-a.nd W, and the rods P and T, are
, only different forms of the same mechanical agents, to illustrate the same principle and gain the same motion.
The operation of my machine is as follows: Folded papers, journals, &c., effy", being placed in feed-box F, motion is given to band-wheel I, from thence on to eccentric, J, crank, N, crank, O, through connecting-rod P; and by means of pin P" a rotary motion is givento er'ank, O, and thus from cog-wheel Q to cog-wheel Q'; thence-,to crank, U, upon roller'B by connecting-rod T, and in a rotary direction upon crank U, bythe device W, und thus through the shaft of roller-B to roller B; bypthis to the slat'ted carrier C, and by the slotted carrier C to roller B'. As the openings or vacancies D D D, dto., passA by fecd-box F, a paper, f, drops in, and by a revolution of roller B the paperfis carried under-the sliding gate L, receives its direction therc. and is' thrown o` the frame A by means of the caps X' X'.
1. The combination of the sliding gate L, and the scissors M M, `of an automatic labelling-machine,with
vthe eccentric J, the transmitting-devices P and T, giving proper periods of rest to the carrying-bands C C',-
all arranged and combined substantially as set forth.
42. The slotted 4connecting-rod P, havinga. compound reciprocating and oscillating motion upon the fulcrumpin P for the purpose of transmitting a rotary motion from ono crank to another, in combination with the other devices of the machine, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with the said devices, or their-equivalents, for transmitting rotary motion, of the auxiliary slot V-in the connecting-rod T, for permitting a rest for the carrying-bands C C', at every revolution of the roller B, as aud for the purpose set forth,
` J. F. ZAGHARIAS.
