Letters Patent 'No. 76,609, dated April 14, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT In user-rose.
Specification of certain Improvements in' Neck-Yokes, invented byALeRO S. DOW, and ELIJAH W. WILCOX, both of Cedar-ville, in the county of Herkimer, and State of New York. I
Nature and-Object of the Invention.
- This invention relates to the device forconnecting the neck-yoke to the pole of the carriage, by whichv invention it is made to work more'satisfactorily, and prevented more effectually from wearing the tongue or pole of the carriage or other vehicle.
[Said invention consists in, p i First, forming the. attachment, by which {the cross-bar or body ofthe neck-yoke is connected to the pole with a swivel formed inthe shank of the attachment, between the band which surrounds the neck-yoke'and the' part of the attachment which goes upon the pole or tongue, by which the backward and forward motionor vibration of the ends of theneck-yoke, to acoommodat e itself to the gait or motion of the team, is allowed without compelling the same vibration of the attachment upon the pole of the carriage, and at the same time the attachment is made strong and reliable.v v
Second, forming that part of the attachment which 'is intended to surround the pole of the carriage or other vehicle, and come in' contact with it, of leather or some other yielding substance secured in'a metallic strap or case, which supports it in front and at the edges, but is left open at the back side, said'leather portion of the attachment being fastenedi'n said case by screws, or equivalent device, which shall hold said leather in place without hearing at all upon the tongue.
Third, forming that portion of the attachment which rests upon the top of the tongue with a cnahion oi leather, or equivalent yielding substance, interposed between the metal and the tongue, whereby the abrasion of the tongue or pole is avoided, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Description of the Drawings.
Figure 1 is a front view of the attachment containing the improvements above mentioned, and showing the central portion of the neck-yoke.
Figure 2 is a vertical central section of the same from front to back.
Figure 3 is a plan or top view of the liolt, which forms the head of the swivel.
General Description.
A is the band, which embraces the central portion of the neck-yoke. We prefer to'make this of cast malleable iron, and in the form represented in the drawings. It is provided with a socket, l3, which forms part of the swivel above mentioned.
C is a strap or case, for holding the leather ring D. This strap or case C shouldalso be made of malleable iron, though other materials may be used. Said strap'O is formed with a projection, E, at its upper end, which extends upward .into the socket B, as shown in fig. 2,'and is secured; there by the screw-bolt F, the head of which comes down upon the top of said projection, and operates in a similar. manner tothe well-known jamnut, to prevent the bolt from turning in the projection E when in use. The head of thisbolt, F, rests upon a shoulder formed in the socket B, as shown, and is provided with a notch, G, made in its periphery, as shown in fig. 3. A hole, H, is also made through the back or front of the socket B, through which hole a nail or other convenient appliance may be insertedinto the notch G to hold the bolt from turning in the socket B, and allow it to be unscrewed by turning the strap-G, when it is desirable to separate the parts for the purpose of more conveniently oiling the joint, or for any other reason, and the same device may be usedsin putting the parts together. In putting them together, care should be taken to screw the bolt-head down snugly upon the top'of the cone or projection E, so much so that it will require more force to start it back than the friction to which it is subjected in use willbe capable of exerting. D is a leather ring or pad, which is fitted into the metallic strap or case 0, and secured in position by screws, J J, or some equivalent device, so constructed and arranged as in no case to bear upon or come in contact with the pole.
The strap C supports the leather in front and at the edges, and as the pressure upon the leather is always forward against the case, the screws are quite sufiicicnt to secure it in position.
A part of this leather is extended up and backward under the rounded part of the case, which comes immediately over the tongue or pole, as represented at K in fi 2, forming a cushion betweenthe back side of the upper part of the case 0 and the tongue, so as to protect the letter from abrasion upon the top.
O'laz'ms.
Wc claim as our inventionv 1. Constructing the attachment, which connects the neck-yoke to the tongue or pole, with aswivel-joint, formed as described, that is to say, by the combination of the socket B, projection E, and bolt F, substantially as hereinbei'ore set forth.
2. The combination of the-metallic strap or case G and the leather ring, or its equivalent, D, said case C being so constructed as to support the said 'ring D in front and at its edges, beneath the pole, as described,
said ring D being secured in position by screws, or other equivalent device nnd the space behind said ring D being left open, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the pad K with the metallic ring, which embraces the pole or tongue, in such a in'anner as to inter-pose the said pad between the tongue and that portion of the case 0 whiph lies directly between the said tongue and the under side of the neck-yoke, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
