WALTER A. EDDY, OF EAST RANDOLPH, NEW YORK.
' Letters Patent Ng.v75,397, dated March 10, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEATS FOR VEHICLES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
' Be it known that I, WALTER A. EDDY, of East Randolph in the county of Cattaraugus, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Seats for Vehicles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon. I
' In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, A represents the seat of an ordinary buggy or cutter, constructed in any ordinary or usual manner and form. B represents ,a small metallic lever, pivoted to the bottom or under side of the bottom board of the seat A. Secured at equal distance from the pivot or bolt which holds the lever B in place, and on opposite sides thereof, are metallic rods, 0 C, which are bent near their outer extremities, so as to fit against the seat-risers at the ends of the seat, and thence through small plates, D D, parallel with the bottom of the seat, and a little below the bottom of the seat-risers. The metallic plates D D are screwed to the bottom board and seat-risers, and form a convenient and strong brace therefor, one end projecting down beyond the bottom of the seat-risers, and provided with a small hole of suitable size and for the ends of the rods 0 C to pass through. i The rods 0 C are opera-ted or moved backward and forward by means of the lever B. which is kept within the required limits by small pins or screws, and is held stationary by means of a. small spring, g, whenever the seat is urljusted as desired. The ends of the rods 0 C, which project through the plates D D, are designed to catch in a groove along the side and near the top of a buggy, wagon, or cutter, or beneath the top-rail of the same, or in one of a series of holes made, for that purpose, through the side thereof, and thereby hold the seat at any point or place on the top or frame desired; At the corners of the seat, or on the ends of. the seat-risers, are secured small strips or pieces of rubber, a: x,
which serve 'to keep the seat from slipping when held in place by the above-doscribeddevice.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the lever B with the connecting-rods C C, plates D D, when secured or adjusted to the bottom of a seat, A, for the purpose of securingthe same on a buggy, wagon, or cutter-top, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 31st day of December, 1867.
