TO ALL WHOM 1T MAY OONCERN:
Be it known thalt I, GEORGE R. HUNTLEY, of Taunton, in 4the county 4ofil3'ristol, and Stute of Massachusetts, have invented u new und useful mprovement in Faucets; und I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the sume, reference being had to the accompanying drawingmnnd the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a. perspective view, .with'u portion of the ringbroken away, to show the vent und checkingoppnratus. l
' Figure 2`is o transverse vertical section taken through the axis of the plug; and
Figure 3 is un enlarged vertical section of the cop ou the lower end of the plug` Similar letters indicate corresponding ports in thosever'nl figures. Y The nature of my invention consists in constructing the vcross-hend of the plug with two removable handles o1' knobs of ivory, or some materiel foreign to the plug, in order that the knobs may be removed while the faucet is in the both for silvcring; also in a, peculiar nrrangemept by which the nut at the bottom of the plug, und holding the sume in place, has its bearing or sent upon o shoulder on the plug; and also in encasing the plug-'spring between two concentric rings formed upon the plug-nut.
To enable others skilled in the art to make und use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction und operation.
In the drawings, Alrepresents the barrel or horizontal portion of the faucet, through which passes the vusual longitudinal hole or bore for the ilow of the liquid, und also the usual .transverse hole for the plug IB.
From this plug, near its upper end, project twoscrew-rods or arms, vic, and upon these urnis are secured, by corresponding female screws, the two ivory knobs or handles IJ as shown.
'Through plug B is the usuel aperture a, which, by turning the plug, may be brought to correspond with the bore of the barrel, to allow the dow of thc liquid. d is n removable ring, upon the. interior of which is i cut u female sorew\vl1ieh secures the ring to a, projecting ilunge formed upon the barrel, and upon which .is
cut o corresponding run-le screw. Ninety degrees of this ilunge are out away, lciving two stops,ff, against which the check-pin e, inserted in the plug, ben'rs when the pl'ug is turned, either. for opening or closing the passage through the barrel. g is o, smell groove, cut longitudinally in plug B, the object of which is to furnish an nir-vent, which, preventing u, vacuum, allows the liquid, when the faucet is being closed, to :dow freely out to the lust drop, instead of dripping, ns 'when there is no nir-vent in the plug. This vent is so arranged, relative to check-pin c and stops ff, that when the faucet is closed the vent is on the side of the plug furthest from the vessel to which the faucet is applied, so that the veut furnishes no facility for leaking.
At the lower end of the plug B is formed a. diminished portion, m, leavingl e shoulder or sent, k, while a. n
circular pluto, it, is formed with u hole in its centre, through which the enlarged part of the plug posses, as shown. Upon the port m is formed o. male screw, und the nut t' z' ts thereto by n corresponding female screw. In the nut iz' is formed u concentric groove, Z Z, leaving nu exterior ring or flange, 'n n, und uninterior one, o o. ln the groove! Z is inserted n. eoilcd'mctnllic spring, jj, which exerts its force upon mit i und' plate h it. When the nut z'z' is screwed iiruily on, itbears upon shoulder c, thereby governing the force to be exerted upon the plug, und allowing thc plete 7.1, .7i to move freely between nut z' z' and the lower part of borrel A A, while the springjj, by its action, forces up plate ,7i 7L against barrel A A, and :it the some time draws plug B downwards by its notion upon nut i2', thereby holding plug B in place, yet e.llowing it to move without rigidityg-and es the spring is inserted between the nut z' z' and the plete ,7i ZL, both of which revolve with vthe plug, the friction which would result from the spring bearing against the barrel .A A is avoided, and the friction between plate h and, the barrel is substituted for it. f
By thus enclosing the springj, und excluding it from view, the faucet is n eoterin appearance and less expensive to finish, es'the spring requires no finish when thus enclosed, and the exterior of the nut requires no more finish than if the spring were exposed; besides, when thus enclosed, the spring is fully protected from injury from external causes.
This faucet is specially adopt-ed to use upon silvered vessels, und, es it must be soldered thereto before being silvered, or, in other words, must'be silvered wit-h the vessels, it follows tibet ivory, whieh is the mest desirable material for the knobs, cannot be used except it be removable, as the silyering-buth would render it unfiti for use by discoloration.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is In'combination with the barrel and plug,
the concentric ring d, Veni'l gfpn e, and stopsff, all constructed anti arranged to operate snbstanpially in manner as and for the purposes specified.
