Letters Patent No. 75,752, [lated Jlarch 24, ISGS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WIND-WHEELS.
uit Segnale' numb in in tiges liltns @anni mit mating putt nt its stun.
V'IO ALL WIIOM IT MAY OONOERN:
Bc it known that I, EARL J. HALL, of Indianapolis, in the county Aof Marion, and State of Indiana, have made certain new and useful Improvements iniWindmills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description-thereoi`, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i Y
rflxis inventionrelates to an` improvement in vthat class of windmills in which vertical fans or wings are combined with4 horizontal disks, so as to form the required windewheel; and this wheel so constructed is surrounded Aby anfadjustablecasin'g of vertical slats, cach slet being provided with journals at its ends, around l which 'it 'rotatesfthe objcc-tgvbeing to open or, close the said adjustable casing of slats more or less, as maybe reduircdsoas `*to admit ajgrcater orless quantity Aof wind to the revolving wheel within, and thus regulate its movements in accordance:withthe attendant circumstances andrequirements. All of the said rotating slats which form the'srurro'ending` using'are actuated sinmltaneously` by means ofc governor.
y Theparticnlar fcatur ffthisinvcntion are more especially'conined to the construction of the fans or wings, upon which the win actsto turn thcmachinc; also to the 'arrangement of the governor, and to its con- ,nclctionpwith thejrotatingslats ot' thc enclosing casing, byfincans `opt-an4 endless chain and coggezl sectors.
'p Iocnable thosesjkilled in the art to make and use my improved windmill, I will proceed to describe its constructiiouandoperation. i J I Figure 1 ofthedranvings is an elevation in pcrspectiveot' one of .the improved windmills.
Figure v2 a sectional plan of the'same, taken en .the'line :u 'yv of iig. 3. Figure 3`is` a. central sectional elevation of the mill.,` d The frame or building A furnishes all necessary supports for'the operative parts of the mill. These consist ot the rotating fan-wheel B-b, thegenclosing adjustable'ca'sing O, and the governor D. The fan-wheel is built upon a centra-l verticals'hal't, Bwhich revolves `with it,fandl transmits power from it to whatever machinery is to be driven by the mill. The saidfan-wheel consists-of two or more horizontal disks b, connected together by a series of verticalfuns B, which are. aiiixed to the'atoresaidA disks near their pcripheries, and in such positions as to form angles of about thirty degrees, (more or less,) with radial lines bisecting them. This arrangement of'the disks and fans is not a new one, but a new feature inthe arrangement consists of' making the retired edge ot the fanpieccs curved inward, as at b1, sans to cause the wind to impinge more violently thereon, and thus increase in a mcasure the power generated bythe machine. Surrounding the wheel B b, is an adjustable casing of vertical slats O, in the ends of which nrejournals, that iind their bearings in the framc'or building A.
A tlxed to the lower end ot` cach of these slats is ucogged sector, e, and surrounding these sectors, is an endless chain, c', as is clearly sho'wn in iig. 2. -This chain is acted on by the governor, as will be hereinafter described morefully, und the chain will act upon the sectors `so as to turn them in such a manner as to'open or close the intcrstices between the said slats, and thus diminish or increase the amount oi wind admitted to the fanwheel, thereby regulating the spcedof the'mill in n perfect manner. By closing the slats C tightly one upon another,`by means of a'lcvcror other mechanical device, (notshowm) the action ot the mill wil-l be entirely suspended.; 'lhe governor, D, may be placed in any convenient location en the frame or building A, -and is to be driven by means of a belt, d, from the shaft D. The governor itseli` maybe constructed in any ofthe most approved forms for constructing governors ot' steam-engines, but I-prefer to use one withshort ar-.ns and quick action. The rotating balls" (Z1 not upon the vertical spindle d2, by centrifugal action, in the usual manner. The
ltop cndfoi' the spindle d2 is connected with the chain-wheel d3, by means of'` a crank-connection, so as to rotate v thc wheel with va rocking motion, as the spindle is worked up or down by thc centrifugal action of the balls all.
The chain c passes around the wheel d3, and turns with it,and in this manner is transmitted from the governor to the slats O thc required motion for regulating the blast of wind upon the wheel B b.
Having described my invention, what I claim, is-
1. 'lhe fans or `wingslS, having their surfaces in straight lines, excepting at their inner ends, which are provided with the short'curvcs b', for the purpose described. v
2.u '.lhe governor, D, wheel d3, and chain c', when combined and arranged substantially as described.
' EARL J'. HALL.
