TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known lthat I, REFUS WRIGHT, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Cherry-Stoner; and I- do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will cnahle'those skilled in the art to-make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine` for depriving cherries of their pits or stones; `and it consists of a peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the work may bc done with great rapidity and in a perfect manner. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure lis a front view of my invention, a portion being in section, as indicated by the line :n rc, fig. 2,
Figure 2, a side view of the same.
Figure 3, a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line y y, g. 2.'
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. v
A represents a standard attached to a suitable base, B, and having a horizontal shaft, C, tted in suitable bearings, da, on its upper end. One end of this shaft C is provided with a pinion, Dwith which a wheel, E, on adriving-shaft, F, gears. On the oppositcend ofthe shaft C there is a double cam, G, which also serves the purpose oi' a crank to operate a vertical reciprocating rod, H, which is fitted in'a guide, b, attached to the standard, said rod H being connected to 'the camby'arod, I, as shown clearly in fig.1; in the lower end of the rod H there is secured a series of small rods o1` needles, c, five, more or less, being used, and provided near their lower endswith notches or barbs, the use of which .willbe presently shown. .I is a hopper attached to one side of the standard A, and having a tube, K, extending down from it. This tubo has a bottom, L, made separately from it, and attached to the lower end oi-` a vertical rod, M, which is itted'in suitable bearings, d', secured to the exterior ofthe tube, as shown in fig. 1, the rod M being allowed Vto turn freely in its bearings. The bottom, L, is provided with n. curved projection, N, and is hollowed at oneedge or side, as shown clearly inriig. 3. O is a spring attachedto the standard A, and conpected to the bottom L. This spring has a tendency to keep the bottom underneath the tube K. The upper end of the rod M has a.` crank, P, formed on it, against which a rib,
'e, onside of the cam Gr, acts to throw the bottom L out from underneath the tube K, the spring O throwing it back underneath the tube K after thc rib e has passed the crank. Q represents a horizontal bed, which extends out from thestandard A, and has a curved guard, R, attached to its upper surface, and a hole, f, made` through it, a. circular cavity, g, beingmade'yin the upper surface of the bed, concentric with the holef and the guard It. Underneath the hed Q there is a horizontal arm, S, fo'rmed by bending the lower end of a vertical rod, T, in a horizontal position. This rod T is viitted insnitable bearings, h, and its `upper end is provided with a. crank, t', against which apin, j, on the cam G, acts, said crank having a spring, c, bearing against it, to throw' it back each time after the pin j has acted uponit. is a bar, which is fitted loosely on a journal, I, attached to the standard A, and passes `through a forli, m, at one end of a. spring, V, attached to the .standard A. The lower end of the bar U is provided with two plates, u u, shown clearly in fig. l, the space between said plates being suiiiciently large` to receive a cherry. The cam G acts againstI the other end ot' the bar U, to move it in one direction, while the spring Vv moves it in the opposite direction.
The operation is as follows.: The hopper I is supplied with cherries, which pass down into the` tube K, and rest upon the bottom L. The shaft F is rotated through the medium of a crank. The rib e of the cam G, in acting againsi he crank P, turns the. bottom L out from underneath the ltube K, and the cherries drop down, one at a time, on the bed Q. When the rib e passes the cranl; P, the spring ,O turns the bottom L underneath the tube K, and the projection N of the bottom throws the cherry into the cavity g of the bed Q, the guard R serving to prevent the cherry being thrown or cast from the bed. At this juncture the rod H is forced down by the cam, and the needles c penetrate the cherry and drive out the pit or stone, forcingit through the hole f in the bed Q, and the horizontal arm S, by the action of the pinj ofthe cam G against the crank t' of rod T, is A thrown across the under side of the holef, and detachee the pit or stone from the. cherry. The rod H `then rises, the notches or barbs on the rods causing the cherry to adhere to it, the cherry being stripped ot as it comes in contact with the upper plate u of the bar U, and, passing between the two plates u u, from' the machine by a sudden forward movement of the lower end of said bar.
is discharged The device performsits work rapidly and in a perfect manner. Il claim as new, and dcsireto secure by Letters Patent- 1.- The reciprocating rod H, armed with the needles c, provided with notches or barbs, in connection with the bed Q, having the recess or cavity g made in it5an1l the holefexteuding entirely through it,=with the arm S Working underneath Jthe holef in the bed,`ai1 .arranged` substantially as and for-*the purpose set forth.
2. The vibrating-TOMU, provided'with the piates u u, in combintionwith the reciprocating rod H, armed with the needles c, andthe bed Q provided Withtheholef, all arranged substantially-in the manner as and for' the purpose specified,
3. The vibrating bottom L,' in connection withrthe'tube K, the former beingg` provide/c1 with the ourved pro-v jection N, and arranged to operate in connection''vith the tially as and for the purpose set forth. l v 4. The Cam Gr, provided with the rim e and pin l7', and connected wither arranged tov operate the rod H,
'bed -Q and guard R, all arranged to operate Substanbottom L, strike or arm S,vand the bar U, for the purpose specified.
