IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.

.TO WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, JEARUM ATKINs,-of' Mokena, Will county, in the State of Illinois, have made new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gratos;v and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of thesame, reference being had to the drawings that accompany and form a part of these specifications.
My invention consists in operating a gate upon parallel levers in such a manner that it moveshorizontally in rectilinear lines, and with the least possible resistance or friction in being opened or closed.
Figure I is an elevation.
Figure 2, a birds-eye or top View.
Figure 3, a cross-section, taken on a line I; c, seen in iig. 1.
Letters A A, two posts connected at their upper end s bymeans ofthe cap or cross-piece B. The gate consists of the perpendicular end-pieces N and slats pmand the horizontal or guidingbar G, and is suspended between the posts A A by means of the radius-bar R and the braces S' S. There are two extra slats, tu, opposite the upper and second slat from' the bottom of the gate. The radius-bar R passes between the slatsp t at the top, its lower end extending between the slatsp u, to which it is secured by a pin, z'. The bracesS S, which arehali' the length of the b ar R, are secured to the centre of theiradius-bar by the pin 7c, and to the posts A A by the pin Z. The radius-bar is jointed at its upper end to the parallel bar D, said barl being jointed .at its opposite end to the post E. The position of the radius-bar R and the braces S S, when the gate is open, is shown by the dotted lines in iig. 1. The horizontal bar'Gr, which extendson a line withthe upper slats back to the po'stiE, works through a mortise in said post, for the purpose of guiding the gate in its movements horizontally, keeping it from being blown or swinging either one way or the other. A friction-roller, F, is placed in themortise, under the bar G. y
Another mode for guiding the upper end of the radius-bar in its up and down movements, as the gate opens and closes, is represented in dotted lines shownatn infig. 1. It consists in placing two rollers upon the pin that passes .through thc radius-bar, said roller to work in grooves in the posts A A. By adoptingthis lastdescribed arrangement the parallel har D maybe dispensed with, and the postl E, in that case, need be only high-enough to guide the horizontalbar G; By proportioning all the parts as described, it will be seen that the gate will have a perfectly horizontal rectilinear movement -in;opening and closing; the weight of the bar R being suiicient to hold the gate when closed without any other fasteping, andwhen open holds it in that position. In opening or closing the gate, after it has passed the centre, it mo'ves of its own accord, thc post E serving as a stop to limit the motion ofthc gate o`n opening, and the post C serving the same purpose when closing.`
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi A gate, constructed as described, having the pivoted braces R S, post A, and guide-bars D Gr, and post E, al1 arranged and operating as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed rny naine to this specicationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JEARUM ATKINS. Witnesses:
C.. F. WILSON, EDM. F. BROWN.
