Description

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
G. s,- BURTON, or. .SENECA `eouiv'rr, onto.V
Letters .Patent 2 Va. 74,665, dated February 18, 1868.
- rumorea srAeme.
@la Straub referat tu mitigar Entert @that ma mating nu nf the rame.
vBe it known that I, C. SL BURTON, in the county of Seneca, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Elevating Staging; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings,`and to the letters of reference marked thereon.` Y l In the anneized drawings, making part of this specification, B Brepresent two sills, which are placed at a suitable distance' apart, and connected together by a cross-'pieee, and which answer the purpose of abase for the scaffold or sta-ging.- Erected upon these sills are two vuprights or standards, AIA, which are provided on their inn'er sides with grooves, which run lengthwise of them from top to bo'ttom.- To steady these uprights they are bracedin two ways, by means of the braces D and E. C represents a cross-ti,e, which liesfromone upright to the other, being suitably framed into their upper ends; The braces E run from the sills to theuprights, while the braces D run from the cross-tie C to the uprights, thus securely bracing said uprights in both directions.
Au arm, N, projects from the centreof the cross-tie C, and, being provided with a. metallic point on its outer ends, which rests'against the building withwhichthe staging is being used, answers as a brace or Arest for the upper end ofthe sca'old. K represents a platform, upon which the painters or builders stand, and is placed horizontally between the uprights A. At each end of this platform arerblocks or bars, G, which are made fast to the said platform, and areprovided ontheir outer sides withtongue'sr tenons, which tit in the grooves inthe uprights sliding in said grooves, and acting as guidesfor the platform as it is raised or lowered. M represents a. narrow counter or bench, which is secured to the outer edge of the platformand which answers for holding the tools of the workmen. The platform has a slot cut in it,and through this slot cords pass to a. windlass, which lies crossw'iseof the platform, having its bearings in it. To this windlass is attached a crank-handle, for turning it. Near each end ofthel cross-tie C is a mortisein which is pivoted a pulley, a. These pulleys are placed vertically. 'HH represent two cords, one end of each of which is secured to the platform near its ends. The other c nds, after being passed over the pulleys a a, are secured to the windlass.
When the windlass is revolved in one direction the cords are woundaround it, and the platform is elevated;
. when it is turned in the opposite direction the cords are unwound, and the'platform is lowered. The workmen are thus enabled to elevate or lower the platform while engaged in working upon it.
Having ,thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure hy Letters Patent', is The combination of the grooved standards AV A, platform K, and bench M, windlass and cords Il H, all constructed andcperating as specified. i
In'testi'mony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 11th day of December, 1867.
