TO ALL WI-IOM IT MAY CONCERN Bey it known that I, WILLIAM BROWN, of West Cambridge, in the county ofv Middlesex, and State of' Massachusetts; have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Shade Roller and Fixtures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilledin the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in whichi Figure 1 is a front 'view of my improved window-shade roller and fixtures.
Figure 2 is a. vertical sectional view taken in the line :v zu, fig. 11.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the roller and bracket at one side detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. p
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in the construction and arrangement of windowshade rollers and fixtures, and consists in a split roller, made of two semicircular pieces lengthwise, and having on one piece a groove, and on the other a, tongue fitting in the groove running down the centre ofthe roller, which split roller is enclosed in a split o r grooved shell or barrel, surmounted with acoruiee more or less ornamental. The end of the window-shade is secured in the split roller by the tongue and groove, and wound up within the buter shell for protection from dust and light when desired. The ends of the split roller are fitted or screwed into one side of round disks or nuts, which have axes on the other side that hang in the side supporting-brackets,
land in one ofthe brackets is a. spiral spring, that bears against the axis ofthe roller, and thus keeps it in place at any desired height of the shade. One of the round disks or nuts on the end oi'- the roller serves also as a cor d-pullcy.
rIhis arrangement olf'shade-iixtures is simple and convenient, and supplies the 'desideratum of an ornamental piece of furnitue and decoration for a window, suitable i'or the parlors of persons of taste with moderate'mean-s. Arrepresents a shade, suspended to a window-fixture, 'in which a is the roller, I] B the brackets,-and c the upper cord-pulley. The lower `cord-pulley fastening-C is secured to the window-f`ramc a little below the middle ofthe shade. The roller ais split down the middle from end to end. In oneparta groove runs down the middle, and in the other part a corresponding tongue. 'lhe upper edge ofthe shade is inserted between the two parts of the split roller, and is held fast in it-by the tongue and groove. The upper cord-pulley c is fitted on one end of the roller a, to clamp thc two parts together, or it may be screwed thereon, and the pulley has an axis or journal on one side to hang in the bracket B. On the other end of the roller is fitted or screwed a disk, e', which, like the cord-pulley c, is provided also with an axis or. journal, hung in the other bracket B. A spiral spring, e, is placed in the bracket to bear against the end of thejournal and keep the roller steady. A shell or barrel, I), which may be made in one or more pieces or sections, is placed around the split roller u. The shell D is slotted from end to end in onevsidc, for the passage ofthe shade through it when placed over the roller, as shown in fig. 2. A cornice or ornamental centre-piece, E, is fitted upon the middle of the shell I), and keeps it in place over the split roller a. These parts may be made of wood or any suitable material.`
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The split roller a, with or without a tongue and groove, for securing the upper end of the shade, substantially :is described, in combination with the case or shell D, as and for the purpose specified.
2. l'hc combination of the split roller u, the nuts-or disks c e', and the brackets Il 3', arranged and operating Substantially as described.
3. The combination of the split roller a, the shell D, and the cornice E, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described. I
WM. BROWN.
