T0' ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known thatl, THOMAS Q. FROST, of Indian River, in the county of Lewis, and State of New York, have invented a. newand useful Improvement iii Washing-lilachines; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the nrt to maire and use the sume, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication.Y
This inventionrelat'esto a new and improved machine for cleansing or purifying linen and other cloths, or articles of a similar' nature, wool, cloth, and leather and the invention consists in operating stnmpers or dashers. within the washing-tali, and also in attaching to the tub rollers, which are made to act 'as' a wringer for the clothes, and whichiform a part ofrthe tub; and also in opera-ting the rods of the dashers in friction-rolls, as
will be hereinafter more fully described.
Figure 1 represents a vertical cross-section of the machine, through the line yy of fig. 2, showing the dnshers, and the manner inwhich they are operated. I Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the line :i: a; of iig. 1, giving n. side view of the gearing by which the'dashers are driven; also of thefrietionrolis.

, A represents the tub, which is made of wood, and of any convenient form and size. It is raised on legs, marked B. C represents thevdashers; D, the dasher-rods; E, the driving-gear wheel; F, the driving-pinion; Giis the driving-shaft, with n crank; His the crank, and J is the crank-shaft,- which imparts motion to the dashers through the pitmen, marked K. L represents the rollers, which form a, part M is the cover. v
The cranks J being attached to the rods of the dashers by the pitmen KK, and being driven by revolving the main wheel E with the crank II, it willhe seen that the dashcrs C will' he given a r11-pid vertical reciprocating motion on the clothes. i
The rollers L are placed in the hack end of the machine, forming a part of the-same, as seen in the drawnging, and they may be 'alsoadjusted byscrews atthe end of the upper roller, as seen in the drawing at N.
them, as seen, through one of which wheels the shaft extends, with a crank on the end, hy which the rollers are revolved.
O represents friction-rollers on top of the tub, and also on the frame which supports the rods. These rolls are placcdin pairs. They are turned or grooved, lso as 'to conform to the shape of the rods, and each rod passes up between two pairs, as seen in the drawing, thus' preventing all friction in their movement up and down.
' Bythis action of the dashers on the-clothes. the clothes are readily cleansed, and n the most expeditious manner, while they arein no danger' of being torn or injured during the processof washing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asV new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi- The combination ofthe dashcrs C, rods D, gear-wheel E, pinion F, crank-shafts G d, pitrnan K, grooved rollers O, and adjustable rollers L, as herein described for the purpose specified.
THOS. Q. FROST.
