Description

@geiten gamins gamut @Hirn Jo H N D. SWARTZ, o F "M ,ILTo-N, PENNSYLVANIA. Letters Patent-Ne. 72,112, dated Deeemcr 10, 1867.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
TO A .LL WIIOBI IT MAY CONCERN: i
Be it knoivn that I, JOHN D. SWRTZ, o'f Milton, in the county of Northumberland, and' State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved 4Clothes-Washing Machine; and I do herebydeclarc-thst the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the artto make and use the p same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersof reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a new and improved clothes-washing machine, ofithat class which are provided xi'ith an oscillating rubber and a concave of rollers. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figurc 1 is a side sectional view of my invention.
Figure 2, a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the suds-box of the machine, which is supported Vby 4four legs, a. vThe suds-box is provided with inclined ends, b b, and a shortbottom, c, as shown clearly in iig. 1, and within the suds-box there are placed tao frames, B D, which are provided with rollers d, the latter being luted or groovcdspirally. The fran'leSVB are curved so thatthe rollers will form a concaie. C represents the rubber, which is of semicylindrical form,
having solid ends, e c, and a periphery composed of slats,f, nailed or otherwise secured to the ends e c. The
slats f have spaces allowed between them, and the outer surfaces of the slats are bevcllcd in V-fo'rm, to make corrugated surfaces. This rubber-is provided uith a shaft, D, which has its bearings in the upper parts of uprights g g, at the outer side of the suds-box, the lower ends of said nprights being connected by a cross-bar, E. The shaft D is allowed 'to'rise and fall freely in slots It h, in the sides oi' the suds-box, and on each end of the shaft there is placed a handle, F. G is a spring,i'\vhich may be constructed of an'clastic Wooden bar, having one end attached to one ot' the legs, a, of the suds-box. This spring passes through a mortise in ,theoross-bar E. The opposite end of the spring G is fitted in one of a series of notches, z', in a bar, H, attachedhto a leg, a,
'and this spring, having it adjusted in a higher or lower notch in bar H, regulates the pressure ofthe rubber t on the clothes, which are subjected to the necessary rubbing and pressure between the rubber and the concave oi' rollers B B.
The rubber C is oseillated byiactuating thethancllcs F F.
The device is extremely simple and eieient, and will perform its work ina thorough manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The slotted arms g, bearing the shaft D and rubber C, when-such arms `are connected at their lower ends by the slot-ted bar E, through which the spring G passes, as herein described for the purpose specified.
2. 'lhe combination of the semicirclar rubber C, slotted arms g, shaftD,'slotted crosssbar E, spirally grooved rollers d, in the curved frames B, the spring gr, and rack II, as herein described for the purpose specied.
vJOHN D. SWARTZ.
