Description

@eine grens @met @man WILLIAM H. SALTMARSH, or WALTHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent lVo. 72,686,r dated December 24, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEEF-SHIEPER PGR MULES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
- Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SALTMARSH, of Waltham, in the countyl of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable BeltjShippers for Mules; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying The nature of my invention consists. in a device by which the belt-shipper is operated by the mule-carriage instead ofthe cam-shaft, as heretofore, the parts being so arranged that the belt may belshipped before the mule arrives at either terminus of its way; that is, by an adjustment, the shipper may operate when the mule is at any desired distance-seven inches, for instance-from the end of its way; the object `ofthis arrangement being to diminish the speedof the mule before the brake goes. on, thereby avoiding the strain on the wheels, gears, and other parts of the machine. The jar which always followstbe change of the belt on a. higb-speeded mule, with the old cam-shipper, is entirely overcome by my improvement. v v I To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and use. In the r lrawingsv v v l AFigure I is an end elevation of a mule, showing the mule-carriage and the belt-shipping device, all other details being omitted. i A Y l Figure 2 is an endelevation, showing an enlarged view of the arrangement ofthe outer` end of the shipper-rod. l
Figure 3 is a vertical' section of the same. A Y
Figuredl is a plan showing how the striker I, fig. '1, is attached to the mule-carricge. v
B C, g. 1, representsthe er-id of a mule-frame, made in the usual manner. I construct a shipper, E F, fig. l, which lswings on a pivot at E, and is controlled by the guide H, sc th'atit vcanvibrate'in one plane only. v Its upper end is provided with a loop or fork, F, through which'the driving-belt passes. Attached to-t-he shipper, at L, is theA rod D E', which has an adjustable link,N, figs.4 I and 2attached by the means of a screw,as shown in the drawing. Attached to theframe Gfligs. I, 2, and 3, is a standard, R., on thc lupper end of which a.
swinging bar, M, is pivoted by the pin P. The swinging bar M has a screw, s, passing through the slot in theA link N, so that it may swingtowards the front of thc machine-thatiis, 'in the direction of the arrow, iig. 2- without moving the bar D E', but if the swinging haris moved ih the opposite direction, the screw e will comel in contact with the end of the linkN'; and thus cause' it, together with the rod D E and the shipper-E F, to move. Attached to the mule-carriage A are two adjustable strikers, K and I, K being adjustablefby means of the two set-nuts VV, the striker I being fastened to the mulefcarriagel by means of two screws, tt', figs. I end- 4, which pass through avslot, as shown in iig. 4, and/it is also adjustable.
VThe operation of my machine isv this: As the mule runs back, the striker K comes in contact with the swinging bar M, and thus operates the shippers'E F. This action takes place just before the mule arrives at the limit of its outward motion, so that it isvnot stopped abruptly.
By' a proper adjustment ofthe striker K and the link N, the shipping of the belt may take place at any desired point in the backward passage of the mulecarriage. ',lhe point in the passage ofthe mule at which the shipping of the belt should take place depends upon the rate of speed at which the machine is running.
Thestriker I acts directlyonvthe shipper E F, in the forward passage ofthe mule, as will be readily undcp stood from the drawings. I
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination and arrangement of the swinging lbar M with the link N, the rod D E', and the shipper E F,substantially as described and for the purpose set forth. v
