Letters Patent No. 72,606, dated December 24, 186i'. l l
IMPROVEMENT IN LABELLING BOTTLE-GORS.
da Stimuli maar tu iu tlg-sse @sitas lenient ma mating part nf the sans.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that'I, FREDERICK W. COPCUT'T, of the city, county, arid State of New York, have invented a new and improved Mea-ns of. Labelling and Securing Bottle-Corks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and'exact description of the same, reference boing had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side View and partial section of a bottle and cork fitted or furnished according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both gures.
This invention consists in a detachable sheet-metal disk or label held upon the top of the cork by the locking-clamp employed to retain thc same in place in the bottle, in such manner that the disk may not only serve its legitimate purpose of a label, but also operateto `prevent the aforesaid clamp from being 'pressed into the cork, which, as is found by experience, materially lessens the security with which the said cork is retained in position, and also interferes with the convenient opening or uncorking of the bottle.
To enable others to understand the nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings. V
The bottle A may be of any suitable form or construction, and has tightly secured around its neck an annular wire, a, which has twoloops, a', formed, oneateach side of thesaid neck ofthe bottle, and through which are passed the laterally-extending jlugsb, of the locking-clamp B, which may be of any ordinary or suitable construction, and which when brought with its upper end above or overtbe top ofthe cork, C, as shown in the drawings, serves to prevent the escape of the said cork from its place in the neck of the bottle. The
cork, C, is fitted into the neck of the bottle in the usual way, and has placed upon its top or outer end a detach-l able circular or other suitably-shaped disk or plate, e, the edges or circumferential portion of which should be curved downward to permit the ready passage of the upper part of the clamp B over or upon the same, as heroinafter further set forth. Y:Provided by any suitable means or process upon the upper surface of the disk are any required words, marks, `or device with which it is desired to distinguish or label the bottle, the disk constituting, in fact, a sheet-metalvlabel placed upon the top of the cork.
The label or disk being thus situated, the locking-clamp is broughtwith its upper or outer portion over the cork, as shown in the drawing, and hereinbefore set forth, with the label interposed between the same and the cork in such manner as to prevent the latter from being forced outward and indented by the clamp from the outward pressure ofA the gases evolved or contained in the soda-water'or like fluid contents of the bottle, which would necessarily tend to loosen the cork, and consequently impair its eiliciency in closing the bottle. The label is thus caused to serve thedouble purpose of marking or distinguishing the bottle, and insuring the proper retention of the cork in place, and may furthermore be manufactured at an eiitremely moderate price. The bottlel is of course uncorkcd or unclosed by simply turning the clamp away or from the saine, which may be much more easily accomplished than would be possible if the outer portion of the clamp were indented or embedded in the cork, as hereinbefore mentioned. Instead of being made of metal, and attached to the annular wire a, as shown in the drawings, the locking-clamp may be simply a wire or twine secured to or around the neck of the bottle in any appropriate way. v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the metallic label c with the holding-clamp B, bottle A, and cork C', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
F. W. COPCUTT.
