Description
@uiten tatrs @anni @Hina JOHN MORTO. N, OF WINCHESTER, INDIANA. Letters Patent No. 72,527, lelated December 24, 1867; antedatcd Deer-uber 7, 1867.
IMPROVED RAILROAD-TRAGK LIFTER.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN MORTON, of Winchester, in the county of Randolph, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Machine for Raising arid Adjusting the Tracks of Railroads, patented by myself; and I do'hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and' exact description of the same, reference being had vto the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation,'and I Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section` l The same letters are employed in the indication of identical parts in both figures.
My improvements relato to the mode of actuating the levers bywhich the hooks' sustaining the'track weresuspended, as described in my Letters Patentvfor a machine for the before-recited purpose, dated March 19, A. D. 1867, to which patent I now refer for a-description of the entire machine. In this specification I need not describe anything more than what may be 'necessary to enable persons skilled in the` art to apply'my improvements to a machine constructed in other respects according to the instructions and explanations therein contained. v l A f' Y In that machine provision was made for raising railroad-track by hooks vsuspended from the short arms of the crossed levers A, the fulcra of which were formed by the diagonal braces B. The crossed levers were,
' in the original machine, actuated bymeans of' a system ci'- levers which I wish to dispense with, substituting therefor the following-described arrangement of mechanism: I
. The levers'A are depressed at their long arms by'chains or cords C attached thereto, and extending down--V wardly, passing under the pulleys D, which are fastened by straps, or otherwise, to the braces'B, and'thcnce the chains -are carried around the axle E', to which they'are secured. This axle is placed in a slot in the vertical post L, and is turned by the spur-wheel F, of which itis part of the shaft. The outer bearingof the shaft E is formed 4in the cap F', fastened to the vertical post L. The spur-wheel F is driven'by ai pinion, G, `placed on. the axle of' the winch H. L is a pawl, hooking into the cogs of the spur-wheel to hold the Weight of the track after it has been raised by the levers A. The post L stands upori a pedestal, K, to which it isattached in such manner as to permit the post to oscillate upon the pedestal enough to accommodate itself to any ihnequalities of surface of the ground on which the latter rests. Hooks, as shown in my original patent, are sus; pended from the lower ends of the crossed levers A A at xx, which are-to be attached under the'rail, the-base,- K, standing on the track between the cross-ties. The track will then be raised by drawing down the uppereuds of the levers A A. v v l What I claim as my invention, and desired to sccureby Letters Patent, is
1. The combination ofthe levers A, for raising railroad-tracks, with the chain or cord C, Aand the mechanism for actuating thesame, substantially as set forth.
2. The arrangement of the mechanism foractuating the tracklifting levers A, said mechanism consisting of the parts C, D, E, F, G, and H,.substantially'a's herein described.
3. The combination of the pedestal K, post L, braces B, and track-lifting levers A, arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
JOHN MORTON.
